Once mighty, Somalia’s army struggles to rebuild itself

As hundreds of Somali army recruits march haltingly around a dusty parade ground on the outskirts of Mogadishu, Ugandan officer Assa Mutebi admits that sometimes his job can feel a little strange.

Mutebi, the “patriotism instructor” for the 2,000-odd recruits who have just returned from a year of European Union-funded training in Uganda, is responsible for teaching the fledgling soldiers to love their own homeland.

“I teach them about.....

Ole man has rearmed his iron gauntlet warning any clique that may disembark from their zones to destabilize somali peace and political resolution. It seems somalia disintegration had proved costly for kenya. I would wonder where we would be at the NFD, ECONOMICALLY. A stabilized NFD will give the much required mode for existence once a political solution post TFG in mogadisho is finalized.

Somalia, finally on the go, crawling to a new future. Lets talk re-armament for the SNA. What equipment do we think they may go for? What countries do we think will train and arm them? Their Navy, Air Force, Army... Can we keep up? Interesting times coming ahead.Somalia to get $10million Coastguard ship

@Jas

In Somalia the word 'turki' has come o me someone who helps the needy. Thro' the Turkish Crescent Society and other agencies the Turkish govt has actually succeeded in endearing themselves to the people of Soomaaliya. A friend in need is a friend indeed. Methinks, the $10million patrol boat is just a sign of things to come. By venturing where others shied from, Turkey has positioned itself to be a longterm development partner of Somalia. By extension, their NATO allies might piggyback and supply arms/training to the fledgling SNA.

Woo and Russia may be the losers in this. They may be asked ''where were you in our times of need?".

What is puzzling is the fact that EU and everyone else knew that the answer to the piracy problem was on land. Somalia needed an administrative solution and pirates would have no base to operate from. Yet they were unwilling to spend a fraction of their millions to stabilize the country. What a shame!!!

Besides fish, some of the big players [Britain and Woo may be foremost in this] may supply weapons and training in exchange for mining rights. AMISOM may end up standingby as the vultures circle to sample the killing.

Eastern Africans must protect and nurture this baby. Train their security forces, teachers, health profesionals, agricultural experts, engineers etc. we must be involved and help bring Somalia to its past glory. The task of rebuilding what was once a thriving country is enormous but it can be done

Why do i get the feeling we are already late into the scene? During Mahmoud's inaugration, not a single Kenyan soul was present! Is this how we welcome a new neighbour? Personally, i believe business can always be won back but if we fail to train the first Corp of SNA Officer Cadets then we might as well forget the whole of Somalia.

The situation in Somalia should be handed very delicately..Quoting or terming Prospecting-for-minerals should begin once a strong political consensus between various local groups, clans and lobby groups is created. Those eyeing anything more than Somalia's well-being should not put the cart before the horse by hurriedly dashing to secure their long-term interests. If not its anarchism we have seen before will revert back to a worse state than before.

Somalia will require a robust military force of say 30,000 strong to take care of things once foreign forces withdraw. We do not want clan based forces or Al-Shabaab to take root again and mess up with everything after all the sacrifices made. We need to move on and focus on growing the economies of this region.

Since Somalia is divided into clans, I was of the Idea that all groups, be involved in reconstruction process. No clan or group should feel superior to any other clan. It is worth noting every foreign troop in Somalia must let the curtain fall once everything is made secure, the police force is assembled, and a reinforced SNA capable of ensuring security for Somalia.

@spartan, the stadium that was repaired is a smaller stadium in the east of Mogadishu. The main stadium, whose photos you have posted here is still unrepaired. AMISOM forces are however due to leave it so that it is repaired too.

Somali National Army (SNA) - Page 3 Empty SOMALIA OPPOSES KN DEPLOYMENT

Post  mchoraji Fri Feb 15 2013, 11:05

Biting the hand that feeds you kind of;

A high-ranking Somali official told the United Nations Security Council on Thursday that her government does not want the African Union military mission in Somalia (Amisom) to be given a maritime component.

Kenya, the only African country deploying naval forces in Somali waters, has long sought UN approval of about $10 million (Sh870m) in funding for an Amisom maritime force.

Somalia’s statement on Thursday of "strong opposition" to that request is disappointing, said Kenyan UN Ambassador Macharia Kamau.

A naval force is needed, he commented, to "address the movement of Shabaab elements as well as their supplies."

"Somalia itself," Ambassador Kamau added, "does not have the capacity to control these elements."

The Somalia government's stand contradicts that of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

In a report that was also brought before the Security Council on Thursday, Mr Ban said the 15-member body should "give serious consideration to the African Union request for an Amisom maritime component."

The UN leader added that naval forces are "critical to consolidate control over southern and central Somalia, in particular wresting control from al-Shabaab of the remaining coastal towns."

But Somalia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fawzia Y. H. Adam told the council that there is "not a compelling reason to take the campaign against al-Shabaab to sea."

"Piracy, human trafficking and smuggling are important challenges," she added, "but are not linked to the mandate of Amisom."

Ms Adam said she wished to reiterate "our strong opposition to the maritime forces to be authorised for Amisom."

Ambassador Kamau said that while Kenya still hopes for UN support for its request, "we respect the right and prerogative of the Somali government to determine what kind of assistance they want to get."

@ countersniper, problem is kenya doesn't want to continue shouldering that aspect of the cost.ke was therefore petitioning the UN to include the maritime component under those whose bill is to be footed by UNSC.kwa UN ndio somalia sent a delegation to oppose it.

At last the embargo is lifted.hope this doesn't take us back to the very un-stable days

The U.N. Security Council agreed on Wednesday to partially lift a decades-old arms embargo on Somalia for one year, allowing the government in Mogadishu to buy light weapons to strengthen its security forces to fight al Qaeda-linked Islamists.

The 15-member council unanimously adopted a British-drafted resolution that also renewed an African Union peacekeeping force for a year and reconfigured the U.N. mission in the Horn of Africa country.

Somalia's government had asked for the arms embargo to be removed entirely and the United States supported that, but other U.N. member states were wary about completely lifting the embargo on a country that is already awash with weapons, diplomats said.

"What we have tried to do is draw a balance between those who wanted an unrestricted lifting of the arms embargo and those who felt it was premature to lift the arms embargo," Britain's U.N. Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant told reporters. "It is a good and strong compromise."

The embargo on Somalia was imposed in 1992 to cut the flow of weapons to warlords, who a year earlier had ousted dictator Mohamed Siad Barre and plunged the country into civil war.

Somalia held its first vote since 1991 last year to elect a president and prime minister.

The Security Council resolution leaves in place a ban on surface-to-air missiles, large-caliber guns, howitzers, cannons and mortars as well as anti-tank guided weapons, mines and night vision weapon sights.

Photoshop!!! And a poor job at that. Someone combined a photo of a landing plane (which is funny considering where it was 'landing') with a picture from this BBC story. Probably a Shabaab propaganda picture.
