The KDF Armoured is way beyond the Somalia Theatre!! In AMISOM going forward, KDF Air-Calvary, Air-force and SOC will be free-ranging all over BOTH main Sectors, mission-expanding and enabling, by gawd!!.

The introduction of These heavier Helicopter Gunships mean that the 'Kenyana' doctrine might be achieved easily assuming other constants remain invariable. comparing the MD500 and the newer heavier gunships the former is limited in endurance and payload therefore cannot be employed far beyond the current territorial borders. Assuming that the projected numbers for the new gunships is delivered within the timeframe and their induction successful, what will be the role of the MD500s? My 2 cents on this would be that they be inducted to National guard duties for the APs RBPU and Police special Ops (GSUs Recce Squad). They are not only light and fast but are also compact and can land in very limited spaces like on the Highways, a top high rise buildings etc which is a direct contrast to the current police fleet of Mi-8. This kind of transfer would save the exchequer a lot of forex. N-way thats just my 2 cents!

Indeed the MD 500 is highly versatile and can be used in variety of roles. i remember when former president MOI deployed a squad to help Kenya wildlife service rangers to fight piracy in the mid 1980s when poachers almost decimated the Kenyan elephants and rhinos.
within six months the poaching menace was eliminated as these poachers were outgunned and had nowhere to hide.

@Countersniper - As afar as I know, the MD500 will retain it central function in Advance Recon and SOC dispersal-insertions and individual extractions - I tell you, nothing quickens the heart like the sight of a stick of Deltas riding to insertion points on the skids of this little bird. And under the AGDU, the GSU Recce, quick-response / anti-terror, for quick insertions of small fire teams as well as Recon purposes. The RDU too for Recon and tactical fire support.

@Vitruvian - you know dang well what the Brits are now up to with this plethora of negative assertions by agents of their MI6 masquerading as African policy experts. afro The proof is in the pudding, the same Brits cleverly opined!! Very Happy

Im gonna now start a debate on the kenyan navy part on the purchase of the jasiri naval vessel. The jasiri frigate or research ship was very costly ship. the last five or 6 years it has been sitting in a dock in spain wasting away while it should be doing its part protecting our territorial waters. But you see the better option for our navy once they recieve the jasiri would be for them to put up several orders to america's ghost fleet of destroyers, frigates and even aircraft carriers, etc because most of the ships are like 10 to 20 years old just wasting away in dockyards not in use so if our government can take advantage of this because obama is president we can purchase these ships at a throw away price would increase the naval power of east africa to make sure that kenyan ships patrol the gulf of aden not american and french ships. I dont know if any of you know the admiral of the kenyan navy but if you do pass the message along.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Navy_reserve_fleets

This is a link to all united states locations of its ghost fleets they even got unused subs.

Cyclone my brother, you are one man full of contradictions. So the Jasiri was expensive, what do we do about it? We buy an even more expensive fleet of frigates destroyers, aircraft carriers ( lol! lol! lol! this one had me in stitches)? Research a little on naval operations. For every 'new' ship we would buy from them, we would require to put them through extensive modifications. New ship borne electronics, possible refits to the super structure, definitely a change of the populsion system, trainning of the crew for the new ship, construction of new berths and related facilities at the various Dock bases of the Kenya Navy etc. now how would that be cheaper? Aircraft carrier you say? hehehe, lets try and figure out how much it may cost to operate a carrier. A prime case would be the USS Saipan i believe. This is an Amphib support ship that can be modified to carrier status. ok lets go about it. let's install a ski jump-because that ship is to small for an angled deck CATOBAR config-, change the main propulsion machinery, Electronics(combat data systems, radar et all), weapons (CIWS etc), counter meausures etc. ESTIMATE THE COST OF THAT.
a step further, lets train the crew. The Saipan displaces about 28000 tons almost same as a fully loaded INS Viraat, so lets estimate a crew of about 1000 ppl. ESTIMATE THAT
After trainning, lets buy them their toys, around 30 warplanes and about 16 helicopters (anti sub, commando, sar and early warning) ESTIMATE THAT
then lets fuel the ship and planes, supply it with food meds etc. ESTIMATE THAT
Lets also take into account the cost of the few planes that will miss the ship and tumble into the sea or crash on the deck. ESTIMATE THAT.
After all that is done, lets estimate the cost of the escort fleet. You do know an aircarrier has to have escorts right? typical composition is an hunter killer sub, a frigate, two anti air destroyers, two anti sub destroyers and a support ship plus the training for the crew. ESTIMATE THAT! Do you think Kenya can manage the total cost of all that my friend?

Someone here said there's a difference between visions and dreams. what are yours?

Kenya Defence Force - Page 2 Empty Alshabab celebrate just outside mogadishu.

Post  countersniper Tue Feb 14 2012, 16:03

Estimated 600 armed alshabab fighters gathered a few miles outside Mogadishu to celebrate..their linkage with alquida thugs..and yet AMISOM says it as largely pacified the areas around Mogadishu.
why they did not take this chance to disrupt this celebration s beyond reason.
it would have been easy to send a few MD 500 if AMISOM had these choppers,to just scatter them just to show who is boss.

Somalia's Al-Shabaab fighters celebrate Al-Qaeda alliance
Kenya Defence Force - Page 2 Somalia-image
Somali Al-Shabaab fighters gather on February 13, 2012 in Elasha Biyaha,
in the Afgoei Corridor, after a demonstration to support the merger of
Al-Shabaab and the Al-Qaeda network.

Gun-toting Al-Shabaab insurgents staged rallies
across Somalia Monday to celebrate their group's recognition by Osama
bin Laden's successor as a member of the Islamist Al-Qaeda network.

"The unification of Al-Shabaab with Al-Qaeda breaks
the hearts of the enemy," Al-Shabaab spokesman Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage
told a crowd of several hundred in rebel-held Afgoye, just outside
Somalia's war-torn capital Mogadishu.

Extremists chanting anti-Western slogans ordered people to attend the rallies, witnesses said.

"At least 600 people gathered carrying placards
supporting the unification of the two groups -- people chanted Allahu
Akbar (God is great)" said Abdikarin Adan, a witness

"Businesses were shut after Al-Shabaab fighters in
cars with loudspeakers ordered people to attend the demonstration," said
Mohamed Sufi, another witness.

Al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri announced in a
video message posted on jihadist forums last week that Al-Shabaab
fighters had joined ranks with the Islamist network.

Al-Shabaab insurgents, fighting to overthrow the
weak Western-backed government in the war-torn Horn of Africa country,
proclaimed their allegiance to then Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden in
2009.

"Mujahideen fighters worldwide, I promise you that
the unification is a sign of the return of the Islamic caliphate
worldwide," Rage added.

Several demonstrations also took place across
Al-Shabaab-held southern Somalia including the port city of merka, where
the extremist gunmen ordered people to shut down businesses to attend
the rally.

"Sheikh Ayman al-Zawahiri has regional leaders in
Iraq, Afghanistan, and sub-Saharan Africa," Rage added. "Here, where we
are today, we will strengthen the unification of the mujahideen
fighters."

Al-Shabaab fighters still control large parts of
central and southern Somalia but are facing increasing pressure from
regional forces, with Kenya in the far south, Ethiopia in the south and
west, and African Union troops in Mogadishu.

Kenya army spokesman Major Emmanuel Chirchir said the rallies were a "forced demonstration."

Somalia's embattled government -- which controls
only Mogadishu with 10,000 AU troops from Uganda, Burundi and Djibouti
repeated calls Monday for the lifting of a United Nations arms
embargo so it can "defend the country."

"We ask all the young people that have been misled by Al-Shabaab to stop working with them," the government statement added.
"The Somali government will not take lightly the
danger from their official union and will put all its forces, as well as
the general public, on the highest alert."

There are about 200 foreign fighters in Somalia with
the Al-Shabaab, Britain's Royal United Services Institute for Defence
and Security Studies said in a report earlier this month.

However, analysts have warned previously that
Al-Qaeda faces significant challenges operating in Somalia, with its
lack of resources, basic infrastructure and potential hostility from
rival clan-based power structures

I agree, KWS could do with a fleet (squadron is it?). This is the goose that lays the golden eggs that bring in the bucks to buy the choppers in the first place. And the goose is being cooked.

KWS already has a fleet of six to eight civilian choppers and several fixed wing aircraft bought during the time of one boss called leakey flown by ex or retired kdf pilots.
also kws rangers operate like a paramilitary organization and they have impressive bush tracking knowledge. it would be easy to operate the MD 500 fully armed with these guys on board

The upgrading of the ACB matrix with a variety of gunships is worth all the recognition it deserves. Whats the purpose of the zw9 vis a vis the MD500 copters. The latter is more common with forummers in here despite the fact that zw9 being more in numbers (units). Which has a larger payload? Which is the preffered chopper for deep insertions? I bet the Kamovs and MI28s dont feature in the current module used by KDF but will soon be enlisted.

In layman terms, the MD500 is primarily a hunter-tank-killer (soft-skinned vehicular and APC too), Advance Recon, and an incredibly effective Fire-platform for close combat support. There are many other designations for this beauty, but this is essentially why we have it. Without doubt, the 55Units of MD500 make the AGDU the most effective anti-tank force in Kenyana, barring none!. But it is not strictly speaking a ‘’Gunship”, which is what both the KAMOV52 and Mi28 are - the Z-9w a hybrid between of the two. For the MF500, limitations that restrict its interface with ground and air elements also make it extremely effective in those defined above.

With the induction of ‘’Gunships’’ into AGDU (Mi28, llikely also Kamov52 sometimes soon), we re-designate the MD500, and not a bit too soon, for SOC and particularly the Deltas. Oh, there are now in-country eight Z-9w and variant, but expect 60 upon full delivery

@CounterSniper – the MD500 in military configuration isn’t for the Paramilitaries. This is one very lethal toy best left to the Military - there isn’t any reason to send an armed MD500 against poachers, man. But KWS could procure an a civilian model for recon, which will be ill-advised considering the mono-role a two-man craft brings to their stable - unless it is configured for Military usage.

i agree an md 500 is fully configured for military use...but you should remember at least four of these were used o hunt down and kill poachers by the moi government while on deployment to the KWS, mid to late eighties.

meanwhile..i see the the Russians come to town to support KDF and AMISOM..this Somalia thing is getting more and more interesting.

The original 50th AIR CAVALRY Battalion(50ACB) which was formed from the former Kenya air force ground to air defense unit GADU and elements from the army WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE HAD 50 MD 500 helicopters at Embakasi garrison
it is possible the numbers went down or up over the years. a number of units crashed during training and operational uses but not more than five.. so i dont know how the figures of 35 or 55 are being arrived at.

@Onkarei, Nice indepth explanation about the two choppers. more than i needed but insightful. Apparently both seem to be having different roles but which has more payload? that was my que. Also as a secondary clarification if i can call it, which is better suited for 'agressor purposes' with fewer sorties?

@Countersniper - I am not the Cop here, and I don't wanna take sides, but I am afraid Jas weighs a lot heavier with a lot of us here ( not to mean you are bad, buddy), we've known him longer, never fired a shot in anger here; lotsa of us respect his opinion a hell of a lot. It is possible you misread his post, and that in my books gives you a healthy benefit of doubt, brother. Why don't we just let this slide, and get back to shooting range again, fellas. Tafadhali!

@Livefire - in terms of payload, depth of aggressor-ability, fire-platform and such-like functions of a "Gunship", the Z-9w is way beyond the MD500. Tis an upgrade by whatever considerations.

@Olekoima - if you recall when the MD500 came, the entire region was awash with Armored aggressor-profiles for which Kenya lacked a effective counter beyond the 77 Units Mk3. Doctrine then started developing and the immediate priority was an Air-Ground-Defense shield that was rapidly deployeable, effective / effecient in ordnance delivery and multi-functional /versatile. Stop those Sudan Tanks to the greatest depth inside Sudan. So - the MD500 and some air-lift choppers. But your car must have five tyres in your car, and when you lose one, you must get replacement to have the five allatime!! Loses of the MD500 are exaggerated, and as for cannibalization? - that is an internet gossip, far as I know. There are 55 Units of variants of fully operational MD500 at this minute in Kenya.

@countersniper & @ Jasiri
First of all you will forgive because i have posted this while a whee bit intoxicated, good.
#1 Today ii have been thru alot,....details of which are a story of another day
but the thing is you are both acting like wiminz without rosez today (A.K.A 14-02)
#2 You both need ...like i said ealier...take madam to a movie, buy her a rose, whatever happens after that must relieve tension
#3 If you are posted to kill AS in som (and no wiminz in sight), divert your angers & emoyions to killing thiose motherfucks and liberating the folks of somalia

It is a pity for a civilian to ask members of the disciplined armed forces to behave liek soldiers

Tom, perhaps you would be willing to give us a brief lesson in the naming convention or formation nomenclature used by KDF.
For example (source Wikipedia), the Infantry has 6 battalions - 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 15. The Paras are 20 battalion, Air Cavalry is 50, there is a 77 artillery battalion and a 78 and 81 tank battalion, among others.
What happens to the numbers in-between?

Not to worry, fusebox. It is a ''blind'', a ''nom de plume''. Just like yours, buddy. Smile

Vitruvian, pls be clearer - several branches to your query, mate!

@ Cylon - Eeeiiish, Bana wee!! GoK has some pretty switched on chaps running policy, little bro. Believe you me, there isn't a dearth of informed philosophy in GoK Policy levels!

..... the better option for our navy once they recieve the jasiri would be for them to put up several orders to america's ghost fleet of destroyers, frigates and even aircraft carriers, ......so if our government can take advantage of this because obama is president we can purchase these ships at a throw away..........

@Cylon - slow down, man. Just take it easy, now. @Fusebox has some valued advise, I reckon. Visions are not necessarily synonymous to dreams Smile .

Alright nakeri i will slow down just a bit sir.
