[quote="MWAURA"]Several comments;
Nkarei, please tell me those M4s are the new 6.8 mm version, developed after the subpar performance of the 5.56mm in Afghanistan. Also, why we couldn't just remain with the unbeatable accuracy and stopping power of the 7.62 nato?

Right Mwaura. Good question that – 6.8mm against the 7,62mm. You have been on this matter quite a while now, as I recall.

So, Granted there is some politics of self-interest involved in flogging / buying the M4, and a not inconsiderable amount of aping the mythical and popular American GI braggadocio – with regular military units, that is. But for my ‘Outfit’’, I tell you tabling with a 30Kg ‘’backpack’’ with probably two long-guns (my preference), a 9mm sidearm ( I prefer the 10mm Italian), a short-blade combat knife, probably five of two types of grenades hanging around your body, a dozen or so clips of rifle ammo and an equal number smaller one, blood expanders and other such trauma field-kit, na kathalika for an entire day over 60Klics, we are desperate to save some weight on anything non-essential. I tell you the difference in weight between the 6.8mm and 7.62 with those figures above in mind is not inconsiderable at the end of a long day’s work!!

Moreover, stopping power is not everything for a specsOps chap these days coz the job gets done up close, very accurate take-downs, and very fast. I will tap him three times before he can say his name, and get him down every time. I doubt any specOps anywhere prefers the 7.62 anymore these days. Furthermore, CQC under the situation of extreme duress we often get into using the metered three-round bursts matrix is entirely different between the two ordnance, as I certain you Mwaura must surely know - makes the difference between either getting your mark down with certitude, or mortally wounding your mark but with enough left in him to get a round inside you as he goes.

I dont see anything devastating on your link. Just a list of military hardware. There is no war mongering going on just different views and opinions on a real-time actual war that our brothers and sisters are currently engaged in for the sake of our country. Perhaps you have a different strategy in mind or opinion on how we should deal with Al-Shabab. Feel free to share, thats what the blog is about. We are all ears.

@ Mwaura - You see, bro, in CQC /short-proximity quiet work, anything you cannot get down on first sight will get you down for sure. So one packs, say an MP5 9mm/ M4s 6.8mm /|AK94 5.56mm/ AR15 5.56mm, in tandem with a silenced ACP.45 UZI, you have versatility all round. Preferences of this combination vary from one fella to another –one of our chaps adds on a pump-action militarized 12gauge shotgun, for heaven’s sake. One of my buddies will only tot a rifle only coz it adds firepower to his stick, but will not deploy without his two handguns of different caliber, one silenced – he detests assault rifles. Stopping power is not the clincher at all - getting your mark down as fast and as dead as possible within the first grouped rounds, is . Now, grouping for deadly effect the standard SpecOps three-round bursts while using a cluttering heavy NATO Infantry 7.62mm in the middle of a frenzied firefight is an incredible feat by any standards. I reckon that is not something I am certain I can confidently undertake each and every time, buddy Mwaura

Understood! Its just that as you said earlier I see an element of aping. Btw,you still haven't specified if those M4s are 6.8mm or 5.56mm?
Though I cannot forecast the future, I can tell you that the DPMS
Panther upper in 6.8mm SPC dropped right on to my existing lower and
shot like a champ. Several hundred rounds into the test and zero
stoppages have occurred. There is really no arguing that the ballistics
of the 6.8mm SPC surpassed those of the 62-grain M855 5.56mm load. Will
that be enough to convince the US Army to make a change? Only time will
tell.
http://www.tactical-life.com/online/special-weapons/dpms-panther-68mm-spc-2/
Now,to the other issues raised.
A KDF officer is truly a lucky chap. Relatively you're the best
paid, good equipment and training and you've been handed an ideal
assignment. Not too much political interference and mission creep and
the chance to test your training. What if you were Senegalese,Zambian or
Brazilian officers? You'd live out a 35 year career without hearing
live battle field fire! You should be grateful to Somalis for allowing
you that luxury-seriously.
SS Jamuhuri, you're totally sold on the
idea of a submarine. The KNS Jasiri episode illustrates the hydographic
vessel was truly a precursor of such a purchase. But,not
for the immediate future. A submarine requires a supporting marine
complement of at least several frigates, not mere gunboats in our
inventory.
Nkarei, please tell me those M4s are the new 6.8 mm
version, developed after the subpar performance of the 5.56mm in
Afghanistan. Also, why we couldn't just remain with the unbeatable
accuracy and stopping power of the 7.62 nato?
This last question is a
response to all the 'experts' and 'armchair analysts,' and is open to
everyone. Everybody from the carjacker king to the Americans,Meles
Zenawi,British,Iranians and even a little Zimbabwean girl called Tendai
Marima have collectively scoffed at the KDF battle capability-WHY???
This is typical of their contempt:
Kenya's surprisingly brave march into southern Somalia, which began in
mid-October, brings to mind the analogy of Kenya as a clumsy, overgrown,
weak-muscled 17-year-old stumbling onto a rainy, muddy battlefield
for the very first time. Weighed down by his kalashnikov and ego, he
fiddles about to get his aim right, but his younger, more agile,
bloodthirsty opponent is already waiting with his weapon cocked and
ready to fire.

Already,in Kismayu, pirates are reducing their ransom demands.
Kenya’s operation against Al Shabaab in Somalia has helped reduce
ransom demands on captured ships as pirates seek to close deals before a
battle between the militants and Kenyan forces at Kismayo.
Shipping experts said that the amount of ransom demanded by pirates
for vessels had dropped by about 50 per cent and could fall further in
coming days once “Operation Linda Nchi” (Defend the Country) is
completed.

“Initially, the pirates holding captive the Algerian flagged MV BLIDA
were demanding $6 million to release the vessel and her multi-national
crew. But a package of $3.5 million was

Its not like that Jasiri “sly planners etc”. They were bitter in fight and power struggles between the TGF and KDF Somali allies. Our intel gives us that Somalia President Sheikh Sharif had threaten to pull his boys from the collation. He vowed if a definite Mandate on governance of Jubaland now southern Somali was not drafted, he wouldn,t rule out an option of siding with the AS and fight against KDF and his allies as invaders. By Moses Njagih and Agencies
Heads
of State of Kenya, Somalia and Uganda have closed ranks over the need
to stabilise the war-torn nation and build on recent military gains
against Al Shabaab. As part of a new agreement, Kenyan troops will join
the Amisom force operating in Mogadishu, alongside Ugandan and Burundian
soldiers. The force is under-strength, with just 9,300 troops, well shy
of the optimum 12,000 the African Union recommended. The goal is to
help the heavily pressed Amisom force retain control of the 98 per cent
of Somalia’s capital Mogadishu that it recently recaptured from the
insurgents, and allow the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) to
extend its control beyond the capital.

Kenya Defence Force - Page 33 Nh171111_01

Kibaki with Uganda President Yoweri Museveni (left) and Somali
President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed after a meeting to discuss the security
situation in Somalia, at State House, Nairobi, on Wednesday. Photo:
Correspondent

President Kibaki’s office said in a statement that the meeting had "welcomed Kenya’s willingness to deploy troops to Amisom".
The
statement did not say if Kenyan troops already inside southern Somalia
would be included in the force, or whether the contribution would
consist of a separate batch of troops.

About 3,000 members of the Kenya Defence Forces are said to be active in the battle against Al Shabaab.
Condemned deal
Other
sources indicated to The Standard that President Museveni was central
to piecing together the deal and bringing Somalia’s TFG President Sheikh
Sharif Ahmed on board, one month after the TFG leader condemned the
Kenyan-led ‘Operation Linda Nchi’ against Al Shabaab.

Soon
after he made the comments, Kenya voiced its protest and Ahmed flew to
Uganda for talks with Museveni, while his Prime Minister Abdiweli
Mohammed arrived in Nairobi to cool tempers and declare his government’s
support for the operation on condition that KDF works with its
soldiers.

Museveni, Kibaki and
Ahmed announced the deal on the day the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF)
marked 30 days since they began their offensive against Al Shabaab
insurgents.

However,
journalists were not allowed to field questions at the press conference.
It was Foreign Affairs Minister Moses Wetangula who read out the joint
communiquÈ by the three leaders.

At
the same time Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officials made what could
be a significant breakthrough in penetrating what police suspect is a
terrorist recruitment and smuggling network when they unearthed fake
Somali passports and identification cards.

Finger print machine
The
KRA officials chanced on the documents during a routine inspection of a
40ft container from the United Arab Emirates at a dry port owned by
Consolbase Ltd in Mombasa.

A company by the name Machine Technology allegedly imported the container. Also found were fingerprint machines.
The Somali-based Islamic militant group is aligned with Al Qaeda and its Yemen-based affiliate, the Arabian Peninsula.
The
leaders called for regional solidarity in the fight against Al Shabaab,
saying the operation by the Kenya Defence Forces and TFG had provided a
perfect opportunity to end atrocities committed by the terror group in
Somalia and restore order to the war-torn country.

The
three presidents met at State House, Nairobi, where they agreed to
maintain the momentum of ‘Operation Linda Nchi’ by sending Kenyan troops
to reinforce the forces waging the battle against the militia group.

The
leaders said the battle waged by Amisom had led to relative liberation
of Mogadishu and its environs from the Al Shabaab menace, and thus
called for more support to help crush the militia.

"The
presidents paid tribute to Amisom and the Troop Contributing Countries
for their continued sacrifices in the pursuit of peace and security in
Somalia, which has resulted in the liberation of Mogadishu," the leaders
added in the communiquÈ.

The
presidents said the joint Kenya-Somali operation presents the region
with a "historic opportunity" to restore stability and security in
Somalia and called for regional solidarity to end the lawlessness that
has lasted two decades.

"In
this regard, the meeting emphasised the need for enhancing co-ordination
between Amisom, TFG forces and the Kenya Defence Forces in order to
successfully defeat Al Shabaab," read the communiquÈ.

Heavy burden
The leaders expressed concern that Kenya was left to bear the heavy burden of supporting hundreds of refugees fleeing Somalia.
They
appealed to the international community to assist humanitarian aid
agencies relocate refugees to secure parts of southern Somalia already
under control of the TFG and KDF forces.

The three presidents are seeking enhanced co-operation between Somali, Kenyan and AU forces in the fight against Al Shabaab.
Somalia has been in chaos for two decades following the 1991 ouster of longtime dictator Siad Barre.
The
heads of state also stressed the need for more engagement by the
Intergovernmental Authority on Development in galvanising international
support for the joint Kenya-Somalia operation with a view to building on
the momentum.

Recruiting al shabaab
The
calls came as it emerged the US and Britain are getting increasingly
concerned that Al Shabaab has stepped up recruitment of their citizens
to fight the TFG in Somalia.

On
Tuesday, Kenya’s envoy to the UN, Macharia Kamau, said, "Over 40 known
American citizens" are in Somalia, warning that there was "a direct
line" from the group "right back to American cities" that "poses a clear
and present danger for Americans".

Cautioned
Kamau: "We should never forget that what’s going on in Somalia, while
it might appear to be far away, out in the middle of nowhere, has
tentacles that stretch back to the United States."

And
he made a fresh appeal to the US to consider imposing a blockade on the
rebel-held Somali port of Kismayu to choke off the insurgents’ supply
line, a move Washington has been reluctant to support.

Late
last month, the military and police arrested two 18-year-old men from
Cardiff, Wales, along Kenya’s border with Somalia. The father of one of
the men told the BBC his son was "brainwashed" to join an Islamic holy
war, and was on his way to link up with the insurgents.

The two were deported to Britain, but released by the UK police after questioning, without any charges.
British
and US counter-terrorism investigators are now raising the red flag
over the growing stream of Americans and Britons heading to Somalia,
pointing to a recruitment video, circulated on the Internet last year.
It features foreign fighters appealing to their fellow Muslims in
various languages, including English, Swedish and Kiswahili, to join Al
Shabaab.

In July last year,
investigators from America’s Homeland Security established that over 40
US citizens had joined Al Shabaab since 2007.

The
US city of Minneapolis, which has the heaviest concentration of
American-Somalis, accounted for at least 24 of these individuals.

If the UPDF even sorties out of Crazy Town in anything stronger than a Recon-by-Force element, the Shi..t will really hit the fan, gentlemen. Hopefully those unhappy faces on both sides of the Ole Man in that Newspaper photoshoot are evidence of unwilling compliance!!

I stated awhile ago, that AS was done, and the only real threat in Somalia was an inadvertent clash between KDF and UPDF/Ethiopia in Upper Gedo and Galmudug. So, Shariff ran to M7 in a panic tried to get him to break out of Mogadishu and push for Baidoa. But with KAF running riot deep in both Gedos and sometimes over suburbs of Mogadishu, and with ghostly elements of KDF wrecking havoc all over Upper Juba and Lower Gedo, the possibilities of hostile contact between UPDF and KDF did not escape the wily guerilla General, nor that breaking out of Mogadishu for Baidoa would require a hell much more Assetss and efforts than the UPDF currently deploys in Mogadishu, not to mention the abandonment of positions and advances paid for with blood by the UPDF.

Consequent to Sharif’s statement condemning KDF egress into Somalia, KDF tactical deployment changed to meet a ‘’new threat matrix’’ of a possible breakout for Baidoa – stop it dead and with finality, by force of arms. In other words, AS becomes a secondary military consideration (tactical and strategic); the movement by the Light Calvary Rangers and the Armoured Recce Units toward Afmadow and Kismayo is halted; KDF goes into a War-mode – forward elements regrouped and strengthened, hard Assets brought forward, Supply and Comm secured, exposed flanks covered; and SF elements take ‘point’ on Recce and Intel as well as aggravated hard and soft target decapitation. This is what brought M7 and Sharif to Nairobi – not the nonsense that Flying Crane is purveying.

After a long absence, I think greetings and a little pat on the shoulder
to all you guys are in order. Now, first things first - Can all of you
now climb down from your self congratulatory pedestals so we can hear
and understand each other? Good.

@ ole Nkarei, I always knew you could give the truth a good stretching
at times but I never even for a single moment considered you a fiction
writer. It gets worse, I never imagined how the hurray of capturing a
few remote towns could really get you to show your true colours.

The scenario you laid out there means one thing, if it ever could exist; either M7 is mad or you were smoking a rather big 'cigarette' as you typed

Anyways, how are the operations for Afmadow and Kismayo progressing.
That is where KDF is going to be tested coz they are urban areas. The
theatre of war in built up areas can really be tricky as the weaker
armies that have been to Somalia (US Army, Ethiopia, UPDF etc) before
the mighty KDF can attest. But you also know these things, and that's why we've been waiting, for five weeks now, for the fall of just Afmadow and
then Kismayo. Right? And I think that's where the strategist that you are should be concentrating your battle simulations. Au sio?

It would seem expletives are the most solid contribution you, spartan, are able to make in any martial discussion. If this is not so, there is no coin in engaging with you at all. So the truth is stretched and incredulous because it looks different through your eyes? Come on, mate! Shades of it are not to mean truth is synonymous with lies, no? Now me neither smoking small or large cigarettes, the KDF ''truth'' is what I give out in metered doses, brother. Neither stretched nor embellished. Not altogether all of it, for sure. It would be instructive if you were to either rebutt it with your version of ''truth'' or proffer any of the vaunted UPDF 'truth' you reckon is often distorted here.

M7 is a lot of good and bad things, like most great leaders, but a fool he certainly is not!

I have downloaded the Communique issued after the Political Meeting between the three Presidents, and a careful study of it will manifestly indicate the chief concern leading to the meeting was the imperative to avoid in-theatre jurisdictional martial conflict – make no mistake KDF is not pissing in the wind in Somalia - critical national interest underpin our deployment in Somalia. My adjutant tells me even a Ugandan Daily directly quote the Kenya Minister for Foreign Affairs alluding to the infamous Kisangani Incident when RPF kicked UPDF backside kinda awfully on jurisdictional conflict in the Congo. Certainly KDF is not RPF by any stretched imagination! So, Spartan, where is the fairy tale you allege reading in my post, brother? So that any sophistication of planning and execution of activities in Somalia must be credited to the American or the French?

@ ole Nkarei, I may be wrong, but I think you addressed only one of the issues I raised; whether M7 is mad (a fool in your answer) or not. I am not at liberty to state why the UPDF is a mighty army as you are with the KDF but I will tell you this about Kisangani;

1. RDF outnumbered UPDF by 3:1 at the start of hostilities. UPDF fighting divisions had moved to Gbagolite and left only administrative units in Kisangani.
2. Kisangani is not Somalia. UPDF was then closer to RPF than it is to KDF now. I can assure you, we learnt our lesson, even the closest of allies can fall out. RDF knew UPDF well (Kagame was a major in NRA before he went to his homeland). Even today, we have Rwandans in UPDF.
3. Rwandese are far more homogeneous than any country in this region. Tz and Rwanda beat you by a mile on our military respect scale as a result of this factor.
4. Rwanda is not Kenya. They can take 1,000 casualities and no one will make a fuss. Kenya, maybe maybe not.

Sorry I have to sign off now

Not sure that is a good idea, and in any case Spartan and his buddies will still see a white man behind the blurred Kenyan Delta, B2O!

Do you recall two years ago when UPDF jumped into Mogadishu I said we would have get in there to save their backsides? After two years of sapping madness in a 20Km by 20Km square exchanging friendly tit-for-tats with field Arty and Heavy Mortars in the midst of Civilian noncombatants? Riding behind Crowd-control APCs, for heavens sake? Well, that is just what KDF has done - saved their backsides, and like the Bulletman says, in an astonishing ''un-african'' 2weeks near-flawless Military Operation over a territory nearly half of Uganda, that has the entire world scratching their heads desperately seeking for the Brits or the Americans ( and now the french, for crying out loud!!) in KDF planning and executive offices! A surgical Missile strike by the Bulletman (which he can just as easily do with eyes closed) ''cannot be possible unless some American/Briti/French Pilot was driving his plane for him'' with Uncle Sam's AWAC circling above him!! My chaps have for weeks been blowing things all over the GEDO and upper Juba, truncating the AS leadership and recruiting base in demoralizing shadow-strikes, and all Spartan sees is martial indecision and lethargy - him being inured to the savage tit-for-tat Mortar exchanges of Mogadishu; There is no American, British or French hand in this at all - they are as mad about us on this as the AS!!

Get used to this, brother Spartan. Hell, we are Kenyans, Period, and this is how we do all our business - not just athletics, dude! All of it.

So the Ole Man determines this nonsensical dance in Mogadishu must end so we can all get back to the business of doing business from Lamu - and throws down the gauntlet to his colleagues. There will be no ''Kisangani'' in Somalia. And every military mind in East Africa knows very well so.

Spartan, I had a half-coy not very far from Kisagani, dude! I know what went down very well, in some detail, and it certainly isn't what you paint here! No secret there, you got creamed proper by the puny RPF then, and not one plausible excuse exists for this. The rest of your mumbling has no martial value, brother. Just get off your butts now and explode out of that little square in Mogadishu towards Puntland, and lets clean out this snake-hole.

a night ops at Kolbio
a day back a coordinated Night strike by ground and air power was conducted. the first time by an African DF at battlefield south of the Sahara. Yes others too have the capacity but we have done it, in real time. For the naive at hand it means " stick your head out at the wrong time and wrong place your fit for a coffin"

@ bravotwozero where you born on a Friday may man? Luck man must you be. A fellow villager a Gun Observer got it on tape. MD500 criss crossing each other in peach darkness at speeds of over 125 knots/232 km/h and traces flying all over. the Kid will upload the videos , keep watching this space.

Hehehe!! I think it was Countersniper that invited Flying Crane to ''sit back and learn''. Now even our cross-training American and Brit SF are shouting themselves hoarse about KDF/SF. Only the Ugandans choose to ''see nothing and hear nothing''! Come on fellas!!
Continuance today, fellas, Afmadow begins to empty, desertions building up. Puntland has closed it's 'border' and the sea at AS back. And Spartan calls for a bloodbath - to prove what??
Risasi, are you in-theatre now?

I salute you, men and women of the KDF. Always knew you were the best but never imagined how absolutely superb.
And glory to our fallen heroes.

Hey guys, what is this obsession about m7 and Ug trying to acquire Sukhoi fighters from Russia? The way forward now for military oriented countries is ballistic missile to fire conventional warheads. To counter this highly rated Sukhoi, you need 3 things. Just to be safe acquire one powerful surface 2 surface, one surface 2 air, and one antiballistics on a warship and this Sukhoi dreams will fade.
