You had me in stitches with that last line, bro. Quite a potent mean-looking bird, fittingly nicknamed the 'Havoc' by NATO. I don't think many countries are going to be buying second hand for much longer. I am comfy in a fifth-hand car but an airframe decommissioned by someone else is different kettle of fish. Way to go.

So, Russia determines a 'libya'' will not happen in Syria, and tells Sammy and Johnny so in very clear language. Backs this statement with muscled movement all over the Caucasus and shuffling Military Asset around Russia.

Syria very rapidly rebuilds a sophisticated Air-Defense Shield that is so dense as to make Johnny think three times about another ''Libya'' in Syria. Not even the Iranians have a better shield.

Guess the port of Delivery? Small little provincial port called Lakatia on the Northern flanks of Syria near Turkey in the Mediterranean - kinda difficult to immediately tell the Shipments on commercial liners are (i) Arms and (ii) heading for Syria.

NATO gets wind of these deliveries and a possible shipment expected in Lakatia, ask NATO sister Turkey to send in the Phantom 4 loaded with photographic surveillance equipment easy routine mission. ''The Phantom does a CAP and ''accidentally'' noses just across the border. Tracking Syrian ATC immediately warns her off, and the Phantom turns and tries a hasty escape.

So, one would think that matters should have been left at that, no? Why then were orders given to splash that Phantom and by whom?

I reckon the Russians forced the Syrian's hand. Now, no-one will fly that close to Syria unless they have War in good mind

That is just bluster, the yapping of a puppy.

The gist of his words were that Turkey will respond robustly to any egress from the direction of Syria that ''appeared'' threatening.

Whatever that Phantom 4 Photographed motivated her destruction and also the frantic and expansive search to retrieve the plane by both NATO and Syria.

And whatever NATO discovered from that Phantom 4 Flight clearly seem to have poured very cold water on all NATO intentions to reprisals or invasion of Syria! See, the UNSC just pronounced herself a few hours ago to be impotent in this matter!!

Agreed. The Turkish bird was on a mission when it was downed by a 'stick' from Syria. But, you will agree that those orders were dumb. Assad has given them the perfect excuse and there is surely going to be a lot more trouble in Syria now than ever before. That they fired at a second Turkish plane but did not down it, in my view, is even dumber. http://www.iol.co.za/news/world/syrian-forces-fired-at-second-plane-1.1327402

Worst case scenario: - all out war between Turkey (+NATO) & Syria (+Russia & +/- Iran) = unlikely. But even if they actually fought, Syria will never win. Turkey (& NATO) will now find it a lot easier to achieve regime change in Syria and I believe they will. Syria's key military installations (locations generally known by NATO) may be hummered by precision misiles fired from ships at safe distances from Syria. As they initially did in Libya. you bet there are already foreign boots on the ground working with ex- Syrian solders.

Syria has declared a 'state of war' as Turkey warned of retaliatory action. But declaration of an external enemy is unlikely to rally Syrians around Assad at this tricky time. In the meantime, the rebels fighting Assad are reported to have reached the capital which has witnessed the most intense fighting ever. And Russia, apparently preparing to cut Syria adrift, says the ship only had 3 old Syrian military choppers that had gone to Russia for refurbishment. https://youtu.be/j6e-rY2fiO8

Complicating matters for Syria - 33 Syrian soldiers (incl a General and 2 senior officers) + their families [total 224 people] have defected and crossed into Turkey. And, On Monday, Turkey's Energy Minister said his government could cut off electricity supplies to Syria (i.e. that is 10% of Syria's energy supply) - their PM is expected to announce the power cut. Methinks, they aren't just bluffing! However, their response is more likely to be covert, at least initially.

IMHO: Syria stirred up a hornet's nest and what they spent years to built may be gutted in quick order with substantial loss of Syrian lives. They have been at pains to deny harbouring any hostility towards Turkey, yet they shot at a second Turkish plane.
The shootings do not advance Syria's interests, especially in the current circumstances. And, if it is true that Russians nudged them to hit the Turkish spy plane they will regret when Russia cuts them adrift. Indeed, we are likely to see widespread destruction in Syria that may end with the killing of Assad and others unless he does a Ben Ali to a safe house in Iran. Methinks Assad has done himself in and he is on his way out. Hope he doesn't wait until Syria is knocked back to the 'stone age' before he leaves. Russia isn't going to openly fight with NATO especially when their own interests are not threatened like they were in Georgia.

dont believe all the propaganda that NATO spews out in the media. Russia will not let Syria go to the dogs unless they benefit from it. Turkey wants to be the Regional King maker and will do everything in its power to degrade Iran and Syria. Those two countries will not achieve what they have achieved if they allow in the Democratic forces in their country. We need to watch Turkey in our backyard people ! If our project clashes with theirs across the border, we will have to open a new front.

I can see the author of the list considered strategic depth, numbers of nuclear warheads and their delivery systems, quality of training, size of the army and battle experience. Evidently Not. A rearrangement of the list suffices at this point. Ama?

The list by spartan makes more sense
..but i believe north Korea should be more up the list because of its military posture and numbers and its pure fanatical devotion by its people prepared to die for their country and dear leader..they have a massive numbers of men under arms(more than 1.5 million) and their special forces battalion are more than 100,000 men fanatically trained to do anything for their country.

did you know that the north Korean missile and artillery battalions have at any one time at least 1000 missiles and various ranges of artillery batteries aimed AND PRIMED to launch at south Korea and particularly the capital city Seoul which is within its artillery range.?

That is why the Americans 30000 strong army will never leave south Korea and the only way to stop the north Koreans is to launch strategic weapons at its military bases.
the north Korean military philosophy is like blitzkrieg on double steroids.
they believe that for every rocket fired at them ,they will respond ten times more....that is why you saw in the last two incidents between the two sides ..whereby they sunk a south Korean naval vessel that encroached on its territory by firing a torpedo from a submarine..and also fired a barrage of shells numbering 200 in a space of five minutes towards a south Korean island when the south Koreans were doing military exercises nearby.
...things are so dicey that since then the Americans and the south Koreans have fleets of armed fighter bombers ready to take of on military bases in the south ready to take out north Korean artillery batteries and bases at any one time.

@Olekoima and others
Turkey is clearly flexing its muscles and looking for an excuse to hit Syria. Pretext might be 1) repulsion of Syrian troops pursuing rebels staging attacks from Turkish soil or 2) pursuit of the PKK rebels who are supported by Syria. But looks like there are going to be skirmishes along that border.

The mobilisation of assets (incl. missile batteries) and troops closer to the Syrian border ( including at least 15 long-range artillery pieces and tanks) and Syria Assad regime stations 170 tanks near the border is certainly indicative of the prevailing tensions.

LUCKY ESCAPE AFTER WINDOW FALLS FROM PLANE
A pilot and his passenger have had a lucky escape after a window blew out on their plane above the Southern Ocean, 150km from Adelaide, Australia.

The Lancair Propjet was flying at 24,000 feet when the window suddenly blew out and damaged the body of the plane.
The pair quickly fitted themselves with oxygen masks in the decompressed cabin and began the risky journey to Adelaide Airport for an emergency landing.

Fire crews were put on standby and the damaged plane was escorted to Adelaide by an Edinburgh-based Royal Australian Airforce training aircraft. The damaged plane landed safely, with the pilot and his passenger escaping uninjured.

The father and son were on their way from Perth to Tasmania, where they were due to catch a flight to New Zealand for a holiday. They now plan to continue their trip to New Zealand on a commercial flight.

Reminds me of a flight i took in a passenger jet from Cairo to Nairobi where the door couldn't shut properly but crew proceeded anyway. Arrived safely but can't forget.

New US Stealth Fighters Now at Iran's Back Door

America's most sophisticated stealth jet fighters have been quietly deployed to an allied base less than 200 miles from Iran's mainland, according to an industry report, but the Air Force adamantly denied the jets' presence is a threat to the Middle East nation. Air Superiority Stealth Fighter Jets - Page 3 Empty AFRICAN SPACE SUCCESS STORY

Post  Spartan Tue Jul 10 2012, 09:08

Nigeria currently has one of the most successful space programmes in Africa. I don't know where Egypt and South Africa are, but reckon they should have the means to achieve similar feats. Next thing we will hear will be that Nigeria is developing ballistic missiles. Mastery of space technology in most cases leads to mastery of ballistic missiles know how.
Air Superiority Stealth Fighter Jets - Page 3 BosunYusufatRAL-448

A Nigerian engineer stands next to NigeriaSat-1 and NigeriaSat-2, which are now in orbit, having lifted off in 2011 aboard, I think, an Indian rocket. Having its own satellites in space gives a country unfettered access. US and NATO-affiliated satellites can not take pictures of US military installations, for example, unless through top level clearance. Those of you who've tried Google Earth will attest to that reality.

So what better way to test their satellite than taking a photo of a US location. One of the first high resolution photos NigeriaSat-1 sent was the Airport of Salt Lake City, seen below

@Spartan
Firstly, without a doubt we should congratulate our fellow brothers in Nigeria for taking bold steps and actually venturing into the space arena. Their resolve does indeed merit a commendation and we should all wish them well and learn from their experiences.

Secondly, let me characterize how the global space technology capability is hierarchically aligned. Refer to the fig below...

Air Superiority Stealth Fighter Jets - Page 3 ++o0awy8rK3r179827RgKoMgAAANBVQJUBAACArgKqDAAAAHQVUGUAAACgq4AqAwAAAF0FVBkAAADoKv4fNGH8723wOxwAAAAASUVORK5CYII=

Most countries in the world (and Africa) are at the User level. (Sat TV, GPS, Sat Comms etc)

In Africa, a few countries have broken into the Space Systems Operators level; these are countries that actually own platforms in space. They have the necessary ground operations capability in place to monitor, control and maintain space assets they may own in orbit to guarantee sound system availability and data reception. E.g. Nigeria, Algeria, South Africa. Operators do not necessarily have to master spacecraft design and manufacture, They can simply buy them and pay for them to be launched.

Spacecraft Manufacturers have the domestic capability and competence to independently conceive, design and manufacture space platforms. Though to an initial and relatively nascent extend, only South Africa can strictly be placed in this category in Africa. Through a domestic company (http://www.sunspace.co.za) they successfully developed a small satellite.

Countries with Launch capability can independently deliver spacecraft to designated orbits. It is quite problematic to master - ask the N. Koreans and Space X. This is why only USA, Russia, China, European Space Agency (ESA) members, Japan, Ukraine, India and Israel possess this know-how. Most recently Iran joined this club. No African country has this capability. In the 1980's the apartheid  regime made some strides in this endeavor with technology transfer from Israel (among other programs like the development of  nukes).

Lastly, only 2 countries dominated Human Spaceflight for a very long time i.e. USA and former Soviet Union (Russia). However, recently (2003) China joined this exclusive club.

Only mastery of launch vehicle (rocket) capability and space transportation systems (rocket engines that effect orbital change) can spawn a ballistics missile capability. Actually it is essentially a dual use technology because all you have to do is replace the satellite at the tip of the launch vehicle with a bomb and voila! You have a ballistic missile. Not to take anything away from them, it is however going to take a while for Nigeria have this capability.

As much as Nigeria is practically a space systems operator, I think it is a step in the right direction that a couple of its engineers were involved in the development of the NigeriaSat-2 and NigeriaSat-X which were acquired from Surrey Satellite Technologies http://www.sstl.co.uk/ These are multispectral earth obervation satellites with a resolution of 32m. They are part of the Disaster Monitoring Constellation (DMC). Algeria too used to have a bird in this constellation. Next, Nigeria should focus on how to domesticate this capability. There will be challenges though in Technology transfer because the likes of DMC are vehicles purposely setup by the Western satellite companies to create a market for their products. It will be counter productive for them to shrink these markets by enabling the customers to be technologically independent.

The other Nigerian satellite NigComSat-1R is a monstrous 5 ton Geostationary communications satellite from China with 40 transponders 28 of which are currently active. It is supposed to provide TV and telecommunication (voice & data) services. It cost $260 million and is a replacement of an initial one that was lost.

There is presently an oversupply of transponders in the satellite communications market by companies like IntelSat, SES etc Also, space-based communications cannot beat terrestrial fiber optic networks. The wisdom behind the massive investment in this platform is topic for another day.

Given a choice, I will put my money on the South African approach as the prudent and effective manner to integrate space technology for national development.

Anybody with money can acquire a spacecraft and pay to launch it in orbit. The big question however is ... Is it done wisely?

In 2011, there was a motion pushed to table a space science policy which ended up to be an intellectual stimulation session.. There are many members states in ESA and NASA that have conceived significant scientific capabilities on top of the commercial and security sector. Though, I bet other areas vis-a-vis academia, industry and security applications can benefit massively. We have to look for ways to Increase spin-offs into an economy to take full advantage of future markets and industrialization capacity. This is in relation to the declining forest cover and rapid desertification caused by expansive population settlement schemes.

Air Superiority Stealth Fighter Jets - Page 3 010205-F-1631A-001

Why exactly wouldn't Kenya want to upgrade to this plane as her 4th generation multi role fighter? It is relatively cheaper, effective with plenty of spares available from varoius sources. Sure, it may not be a match for the new Sukhoi, but one can get round this by procuring it in numbers (after all it is cheaper). I know colleages will admonish me for bringing back this topic ( which we have previously debated severally ), but i don't just understand the obssesion with the more expensive and perhaps difficult to get F-15. Further more various sites i have visited do not seem to indicate that Kenya is actually eying the F-15. The F-16 has served several countries well and still remains one of the top range fighter jets of the world. What is more, it is still fielded by the world's sole superpower- the US and has seen action in various war theatres with impressive results. My beef with the F-15 is that very few countries operate this bird hence there is real danger of running into trouble with spares should US decide to embargo them in the event of a misunderstanding ( these thing do happen at times ) or when they may want to arm twist you to play their ball. Morocco has not been detered by the presence of Sukhois next door in Algeria and as a response has gone a head to procure several frames of the F-16 to match. This is a clever move in my view although there are no obvious tensions between the two neighbours. This is exactly the situation currently obtaining between neighbours Kenya and Uganda or Kenya and Ethiopia. Two neighbours who have the formidable Sukhoi fighter jets.

@HokumA, @Risasi and others

How does this bird compare with the F-22?

I can’t rated it next to the F-22 the F-22 is the best fighter in the world.but that’s a bird worth while. Any day anytime wouldn’t mind riding it.

The J-10 right? Well it is a good fighter although untested yet. Who knows how it is likely to fare in combat. Further more it looks like it is not ready for export yet although they are working on this. First export version likely in 2015 and Pakistan is first on line. Others might have to wait a little longer. Many countries seem interested though.

Reaper Drone software hacked

...The team, led by professor Todd Humphreys, was offered $1,000 if they could successfully hack into a drone flying overhead and hijack it to fly off its course. With less than $1,000 worth of parts, Humphreys and his team from the UT Radionavigation Laboratory were able to “spoof” the GPS on the Drone and take it off its course, sending it hurtling towards the ground, pulling up just before collision, thus shining a glaring light on a potential security flaw in the drone’s technology...

“What if you could take down one of these drones delivering FedEx packages and use that as your missile? That’s the same mentality the 9-11 attackers had,” he told Fox News, who broke the story earlier this week.

“In 5 or 10 years you have 30,000 drones in the airspace. Each one of these could be a potential missile used against us.”...

Fred Smith, FedEx founder has also voiced interest in using the drones to ship packages across the country [US].

The Block II JF-17 is even better. a 4.5 gen fighter with reduced RCS, superior weapons and electronics..a semi-stealth fighter at an unbeatable price but best of all has my personal favourite, CANARDS. it would have been perfect however, if it had a bubble canopy Air Superiority Stealth Fighter Jets - Page 3 Pafzhuhai20104
