Great pictures. Thanks Spartan. Is that a T-55 tank? Looks heavily modified.

There are mainly T-55s in Som, think it looks like the one below upfront taken in Feb
That and the 106mm Recoiless Rifle are very useful against Al Shabaab 'Technicals'. The Fog of War gets a new meaning when fighting in the desert. Glasses sometimes come in handy

Afgoye Taken
A few minutes ago it was confirmed that Afgoye, the second most important town to Al Shabaab after Kismayo, had been wrested from the enemy. Own forces now streaming in, motorised armored units first. Pics taken today below
A UGABAG unit prepares to advance on the town
AMISOM and TFG forces soften the enemy positions hours before the Al Shabaab are forced to cede the town.

Conrats to UGABAG in particular and AMISOM in general. Now for the Juba river...
Those tanks look like the T-55G in service with TZ. I rem Mjeshi mmoja uploading pics of upgraded UPDF armour.

courtesey of Mjeshi mmoja pg 6.
the upgrade includes of:
The U.P.D.F T-55’s are now officially upgraded to the T-55AM M.B.T.
a totally new fire control system called "Klavido" (Hammer).Kladivo consisted of a Czech-designed laser range finder, new ballistic computer, and wind drift sensor combined with the new Soviet 1K13 fire control sight. The 1K13 also permitted the tank to use the new 9K116 Bastion (AT-10) through-the-barrel guided missile system. The tank got an upgraded V-55AM2 engine, Lastly, it also received new radio sets, skirts and a laser warning receiver and Type 906B "Tucha" smoke grenade protection system with eight 76mm tubes

See Pics of yesterday's entrance into the center of Afgoye, a little disappointed the AS did not put up a fight. Weird

Am told that is a T-72, not upgraded T-55. T-55s are also in the theatre and they are unmistakable, like the one below in action outside Afgoye yesterday

Faith: Believing without seeing. Someone has faith 'issues' here. The T-55 and the T-72 are very different, one simple way to tell them apart is by looking at the turret and the gun. This is because the rest of the body (the hull) is covered by the explosive reactive armour boxes. While the T-55 gun is almost the same width all around and is shorter, the T-72 main gun is wide in some places and narrow in others. Secondly, the T-55 turret is bigger than that of the T-72.
Tanks get upgraded all the time but replacing the turret and the gun is unheard of. The first pic below is a T-55 and the second is a T-72. I stand to be corrected.
T-55
The Tanzanians operate the Chinese Type-59G, not T-55G (If it even exists). See pics below
You make owning T-72s a big deal when even the SPLA rides them.
Standby for T-90 pics, although I get the feeling establishment would not approve their posting here

I heard that a senior Al-Shabaab commander was killed in the assault on their positions in/around Afgooye. Can you confirm who it was?

Re: Uganda Peoples Defence Force (UPDF),
@Spartan,the Israelis did it with the Magach, an upgraded version of the M-48 & M-60 PATTON. Passive armour, new FCS, a more powerful gun, new road wheels, thermal sleeves..the whole nine yards. my personal favourite, the Magach 7 i personally believe this is the direction the KDF should have gone with the Vickers.
reason i'm asking for a side shot is so i can count the road wheels. i know the T-72 has one extra road wheel. I was taught prudence bro Spartan, si kupenda kwangu.

Sure, i was going to say the same thing. These machines are becoming quite popular in Africa much like the T-55s were. We see them in DRC, Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Angola, Algeria, Nigeria, Morocco and well i didn't know, but looks like Uganda too.

That's your typical Ugandan opposition politician. Ugandans look across the border and envy the kind of politics you have compared to these detractors who can't quite understand that an opposition politician can also be patriotic.
"We shall arrest any al-Shabab we see but we shall shoot to death any soldier on the spot who is robbing civilians," - Abdikarim Yusuf Dhagabadan, the chief of Somalia's armed forces.
Looks like Somalia is set to follow the likes of Uganda and Rwanda's strict summary field disciplinary measures for soldiers. Read on here
I think it will stand them in good stead down the road. Fear is one of the strongest motivators known to man

SUKHOIs TO SOMALIA?
Ati;
“What is delaying their deployment is protocol which has to be signed
because these flankers are being hired from Uganda so payment has to be
settled”
And that;
“The president accepted and we have showed our Western (American and
Britain) friends that we need to change. We can’t use the same force
that fought Al Shabaab in the urban centres, as well as pursue them in
the jungles. It’s clear that we need support, we are happy that this is
being respected,” a reliable source told the Redpepper.
NB: The Redpepper is a tabloid and reader discretion is highly advised.

Wow, so we shall be seeing the Sukhois in action too in Somalia? A good opportunity to test their prowess in Ugandan hands. Or are the Russians still around?
