Heko Uganda. Fifty years of Independece!
And against all prophesis by our Colonial Tormentors, we are still here, limping kidogo but growing stronger each year, by gawd!
Btw - early this year there were some "probes" mooted high up the Brass in EAC for some limited "Joint" Military Displays in these landmark 50years Independence celebration that were significantly taking place same year in all of EAC. Guess who poured cold water on this brilliant idea?

Congratulations The pearl of Africa!!
Uganda is celebrating 50 years of self-rule, what a joy and a colorful sight. I think from now jubilee should be reduced to anniversary to keep reminding us we are running our own affairs and we can only succeed henceforth. Congratulations Bros from UG.

The EAC spirit was alive at Kololo, as well as in the speeches. Some more pics
A lady waves the EAC flag before performing.
Musician juliana entertains the crowds while they wait for the guests. Btw, President Kibaki was I think the second last to arrive. The last was good old Rob Mugabe who got a thunderous reception from the crowd, don't know what fascinates people about him.
The VIP sitting area, including the elusive 'most eligible bachelor' president of Botswana
A lot of industries exhibited, including for the first time the defence-run Luwero Industries with its giant dummy bullet.
Oops..you don't want to be the guy who drops that on this big day. This was after the first match past parade.
The Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi came with traditional Egyptian musicians who performed for the crowds.
UPDF infront and the Police at the bark
A 'Guard' platoon passes past the VIP area in slow match.
The goose match. I am told this particular group of UPDF had just come from Somalia. Aggressor, any truth to that info?
Unveiled yesterday was the monument to the unknown fallen soldier, of which there are legion in Ug
Let's just say, not all Ugandans were very impressed.

No VIP protection preparations are complete without jamming equipment, whatever the form they may take. In convoys you can bet your mama on the car just behind the principal's.

When we were in school truckloads of PGB would be poured to frisk each student entering the compound all day long, the Man would show up in the evening have tea with the VC and off he went. I remember a time we went on strike and Men/Women of Bombo in full combat gear including a tank came to say hi, M7 does love a secure environment if you ask me.

The " Deterrent" is both inferred and proffered. And in Uganda the AK47 is as widely accepted symbol of force projection in the citizenry as they get.
The first-tier ring around the Ole Man have AutoMag-type side arms with 22round mags and individual short Uzis. Their Tactical Vehicle is a heavily stocked Armory that includes anti-tank and Tactical anti-air weaponry. Add to the Presidential Escort another half-Coy fully armed GSU in close proximity the Ole Man and the other half-Coy on short-leash standby. Those chaps can wage a short war all by themselves and acquit themselves pretty well. Plus a host of chaps from several Civilian and Military Agencies, Military Helio on full standby, designated Emergency medical protocols. Upward of a thousand people dedicated to the movement of the Ole Man.

If you ask me, a completely waste of scarce resource. I wonder why would someone need that kind of security; sometimes I cry for a Africa. I wait for a day when Africa leaders would actually worry about their people lives rather looking over their shoulders and acting like Gods.

Re: Uganda Peoples Defence Force (UPDF),
One thousand people for a single individual in this cash-strapped economy? Impressive, but what a gratuitous waste of resources. That's, what, something less than 1/4 of the number of KDF troops required to quell the AS in southern Somalia over the course of a year? Does anyone else get a feeling of gross disproportion, intemperance and inequality here? Like we don't desperately need security personnel on our streets, teachers in our school and doctors in our hospitals. Oh yeah, but that's for ordinary wananchi, doh!ole Nkarei wrote:jasiri wrote:http://www.monitor.co.ug/News/National/LIVE+UPDATES++2012+Uganda+Jubilee+celebrations/-/688334/1528686/-/10u3kfuz/-/index.html

Indicative of the extent to which the self-importance and pompousness of our politicians is exaggerated. And inversely proportional to the competence with which they govern us.

The President is the center of power in a Country and common sense dictates that He/She should be guarded with all we have got else we will have an OLN Somalia style. Below is a summary of what Obama was packing when he paid the Indians a visit back in 2010.
1. 34 warships
2. 1 aircraft carrier
3. 2 Jets armed with advanced communication and security systems
4. 45 armored limousines
5. 30 elite sniffer dogs
6. 500 Special Men
7. 18 C-17 Globemaster for logistical support
8. Plus thousands of Locals
All this for a 2 day trip (costing the US tax payer 200 M USD per day), Imagine what the guy would pack for a week long trip.

Re: Uganda Peoples Defence Force (UPDF),
Obama oversees a GDP of $15 trillion, or almost 1/4 of the gross world product. This is almost 500 times greater than the GDP of Kenya.HokumA wrote:MAKE_IT_SIMPLE wrote:If you ask me, a completely waste of scarce resource. Proportionally, then, Kibaki (or whoever the next Kenyan president to visit India will be) should have a security detail of:
1. 0.068 warships
2. 0.002 aircraft carriers
3. 0.004 jets armed with advanced communication and security systems
4. 0.09 armoured limousines
5. 0.06 elite sniffer dogs
6. 1 Special Man
7. 0.036 C-17 Globemasters for logistical support
8. Plus 4 or 5 locals
That's for an official trip to, say, India. Not a spin from State House to Parliament.
Alternatively, if the US were to do it on Kenya's scale, there should be 500,000 security personnel attending to one man's personal security at any one time.

Definitely NOT the reaction I intended, doggonit! Now, see @Vitruvian on the prowl taking no prisoners! Put your piece up, man. You got this pert but you got it backwards.
When the Prezzo moves about a district, every GoK officer with any level of executive responsibilities is on call. That includes the dedicated elements who may be just Company size to the non-dedicated elements on secondary call. This is expedient and expected - imagine the consequences of a fatal breech of the Kenya-CEO security on our fragile National Fabric and nascent institutions? While the USA would probably not miss a step from an assassinated President, I doubt Kenya and most African Nations would escape complete implosion - habyriama's death was trigger to the Rwandaise Genocide. It will take quite a while for Kenya to build the essential rigidity in our Nationhood, and in attendance a cautionary approach to the Prezzo's security, no matter that it is comparatively more expensive than Obama's, rather than court the horrendous expense of a sloppy and casual approach robot.
Safe your AutoMag, @Vitruvian!

"Kayihura said 27 have been charged in court and four released on bond pending further investigation. He also revealed that there are some young people who are being trained in Kenya, DRC and Tanzania to return here and destabilize Uganda".
Those are serious allegations, I sure hope you are wrong Police Chief, Gen. Kale Kayihura.
