Uganda Peoples Defence Force (UPDF),
Its numerical strength is 50,000. According to the CIA's rankings, the UPDF is the 8th most powerful army in Africa. The army has been fighting the Lord's Resistance army and other rebels for over 20 years.
The current Chief of Defence Forces General Aronda Nyakairima is instrumental in creating a new image for the UPDF.General Aronda Nyakairima has a dedicated ear for Ex-South Africa military personals for charting his way forward. UPDF is divided into five divisions. Each structured to accommodate different specialisations. These include land forces (infantry), paramiltary and commando units. The air force, navy and mechanised brigade, presidential guard brigade are constituted separately, but still under the UPDF command structure.
Of all the five East African armies, the UPDF is perhaps the army with the most combat experience, since they have fought in Congo, the Sudan and Rwanda.
Information from the CIA and Institute of Strategic Studies says UPDF is mainly armed with eastern Europe and Chinese weapons. According to the reports, the mechanised brigade is equipped with T-55 and T-62 tanks, the artillery pieces are BM-21s, 155mm Howitzers, 122mm guns, several South African APCs the air force has Mig-21, Mig-23 fighter planes, Mi-17 and Mi-35 helicopter gunships.
UPDF seeks for "oil for weapon exchange program" with weapons manufactures. In this deal UPDF will acquire Su30 superiority fighters and apc from Russia.

Good to note that Uganda is finally addressing some areas of weaknesses in her military. In the past transport logistics have been a major constraint especially during engagements with Joseph Kony's LRA with soldiers marching all the way from Congo forest on foot.

Re: Uganda Peoples Defence Force (UPDF),
I find the whole idea of military rankings to be quite misleading more like the Coca-Cola FIFA rankings in football. What criteria does CIA use to arrive at these rankings? How is it possible for example that tiny Rwanda can rank a head of Tanzania a country it can never hope to challenge military wise.

FYI What FiFA ranking standards. those mkikuyu generals you have are good business men then military personnel. For you to gain a slot in the CIA rankings you should have planned for and executed a war. Rwanda and Uganda military Head quarters, operation centers and other Intel departments have done the art of war planning. gather information planned and executed wars what ever the out comes were. but they have done it. our systems have been tested and responses show, that how you gain a slot in the CIA war list. Its not just theory ,exercises or national parades and glamorous uniforms.
and millitary guys like the risai and mjeshi knows this am i wrong correct me if i am.

Mr crane UG is higher then Kenya in the CIA list because UG has conducted several wars and not due to its potentiality or ability period nothing more.

Mr Crane, it could be a lot useful if you give your responses in a civil language. That way you gain the respect of all of us. Insults don't help you to advance your ideas any better. So what is wrong with Kikuyu generals?

The only place Kenya will beat these countries is at the top ten corrupted countries in the world. Like anglo leasing, the new apc scandals, and the Kns jasiri scandals.Wish you the best buddies continue leaving in denial.

UGANDA TO HOST THE United States African Command (AFRICOM)
Its high times that Kenya starts taking the UPDF seriously. The rest of the world is.
we ought to walk as equals from now on. UPDF has potentials that super powers have seen.
The US has a lot of respect and acknowledges Uganda in its fight against terror. Uganda is a raising power in Africa military aspirations. More to come ladies and gentlemen.

Where have we implied that we were not taking UPDF seriously. My friend it is you who is suffering from inferiority complex. You don't find us Kenyans discussing issues facing other East African sister countries. Besides, it is extremely remote that we will fight Uganda nor Tanzania any time soon . So what are these lullabies about Uganda's growing military muscle? Idi Amin did the same in the 70's so what did he do with Kenya apart from falling to a lesser equipped, but highly disciplined Tanzania.

I don,t know from which angle your looking at this msg. but from my collections the AFRICOM at Uganda will be just a camp.
Camps are mainly logistic support centers or hubs for movement. Don’t assume that with such facilities you will receive unprecedented military aid.

Re: Uganda Peoples Defence Force (UPDF),
AFRICOM headquarters’ and administrative center will always be in Kelley Barracks in Stuttgart, Germany. The idea of building a second Africom camp after Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti was floated last year and faced with mix reactions. Nigeria didn,t want any US military base in Africa as this will bring anxieties; the soviet and the Al Qaeda will increase their activities in the region.
South africa and Libya were interested to host it but were geographically knocked out.
With an existing camp in nearby Djibouti, the ugandan camp will likely be a network facilities rather then a military enclave filled with F-16 and F-15.
If the us was to build a training facility for counter insurgency operation then be rest assured the UPDF would have benefited from the training.

My brother, what is this obsession about Kenya? Can't you do your things quietly without referring to Kenya? I guess Kenya must be a real concern to Uganda. Yes there are things you might have which we don't, but does that change anything? Similarly there are several things that we have and you also don't have. When you talk of corruption, is Uganda in itself free from it? The fact that you media doesn't mention does not mean it is not there. In any case the media in UG is extremely controlled/Muzzled hence unable to report anything that paints the government in bad light. This is not the case in Kenya, we are a more advanced society. You will get there too one day when you become a little more democratic unlike now.

Re: Uganda Peoples Defence Force (UPDF),
@Flying Crane research on Colonels Mugume and Mateka of the U.P.D.F. highly trained disciplined with impeccable clean records who have served your country with honour.
The former U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld awarded them with Medals of Honor, to be delivered by the U.S embassy in Kampala to the Chief of Defence Forces General Aronda Nyakairima with instructions to award them to the 2 officers. what happens next ? the Chief of Defence staff steal or keeps the Medals as his personal possessions and refuse to hand them over to them.
So Mr crane before you remove the spec out of your brothers eyes check your own.

How many APCs from South Africa are the Ugandans getting?
The current issue of Janes defense weekly on procurement states that Kenya is to receive 150 units of APCs ( type not specified) from a South African firm. The last deliveries will be June 2011.

Well, we must really learn to appreciate that no East African country is actually a threat to the other (security wise). Our biggest threat will perhaps arise from the North as a result of the Nile. This is why we must collectively pull resources so as to sufficiently defend ourselves if the need arises. It is for this reason that i' am happy when any East African sister state pays attention to matters security. I don't really see ourselves fighting one another in the foreseeable future. Besides, doing so will be a stupid move that will only retard development in this region.
With an independent South Sudan, EAC should expand to also include, Ethiopia and DRC. This will result in a massive entity that is difficult to beat or ignore. Over to you Mr Flying Crane, would you rather we fought among ourselves and destroy this dream?
