Re: Kenya Defence Forces (KDF)
Havoc N been around since mid last year. A lot of training since then (Night Ops/SF). You need better hears and zoom plus luck to be at the right place/right time. Qty = above 10. As for eagles/mig/rafale/falcons/saab.....this story is always murky. Like flying crane called it; so be it remain a dream. Possibly it may not be uncle sam because the last sale request authorization document did not feature ke. However, it is open secret that makers of falcons are pushing for some expansion of market or more costs per unit to sam to avoid layoffs.mchoraji wrote:Olekoima wrote:@Mchoraji,
You confirm you have seen the Mi-28s? I would love to set my eyes on them too.
This is the Mil official website & they list Kenya as one of the three operators.

The others being Russia & Iraq. Of course we have seen photos of the Russian & Iraqi ones. I haven't seen the Kenyan but a friend who works at 50th Air Calvary confirmed ziko though not at their Embakasi base.

Kenya pours billions into army and police
In Summary
- The enhanced allocations signal the government’s commitment to ramp up security in the wake of terrorist attacks in which more than 150 Kenyans have been killed and which have led to a sharp decline in tourism.
- According to the Budget summary for 2015/2016, the government has focused on stimulating growth in agriculture, tourism and manufacturing which were hit hard by insecurity and erratic rainfall last year.
- Road construction will be allocated Sh58.5 billion out of which Sh5 billion will go to an annuity designed to attract investment from the private sector. Road maintenance will get another Sh26.6 billion while Sh42.3 billion will be spent on foreign funded roads.

EU Parliament votes to aid Kenya fight terrorism
The European Union (EU) Parliament has voted to supply Kenya with military aid to bolster the war against Al-Shabaab.
The Somalia-based terror group has claimed responsibility for a series of attacks in the country, including the recent killing of 148 people at Garissa University College. THE KAF SHOULD NOT PRIORITISE FIGHTERS...
...but transport! Yes,I know some of you, many will hate me but we need TRANSPORT! I think it was Jas or Vit,maybe Risasi who said we can only carry a battalion using ALL KAF ASSETS!
If it were up to me I'd not think of fighters til we have at least 6,ideally 8 new CASA 295s and a similar number of MI 17s.

My heart skips a beat every time M29 is mentioned in relation to Ke especially when Rafale and Fighting Falcons are readily available. Pumas have been serving tirelessly for close to 30yrs so do Tigers. M17s just got into service and we all know the story.
Am yet to see a true finished/polished kite produced by Mikoyan. Even SU family got issues and Crane can be honest on that. This is an industry where the East still got something to learn.
Anyway; what is the current dream? Can someone peep at Kerry's paperwork for "the quantity"?

Airlift capacity for any air force is a key component of the total air asset inventory.MWAURA wrote:...but transport! Yes,I know some of you, many will hate me but we need TRANSPORT! I think it was Jas or Vit,maybe Risasi who said we can only carry a battalion using ALL KAF ASSETS!

It is time we stopped going for expensive air assets which even though last long but are never adequate. i see no reason why we should continue holding on to Buffs and yet the east have cheaper A/C with a much bigger capacity and at pocket friendly prices. It is only Kenya in the whole of East africa without heavy lift transporter. such A/C like AN-12, AN-32, Mi-8, heck or even Mi-26 have been acquired by even the lowliest of countries and have worked well for them.

Hi guys, been in the shadows following all development on this forum keenly, well there was a time I wanted to join in the mud fight and bitch slap everyone involved : twisted aah!!.... those were ugly times.
@Mwaura & @Sierra Kilo; I agree with your premise there above for the fast strike birds... we should cool off a bit and say revisit this maneno in like 4-6 years, Am saying 4-6 years since by then we will be in a better position to sample a variety of birds in the markets and there reliability concerns from China J-20 to SU-35, upgraded F-15, F-16, F-18A, upgraded Gripen etc then we go for something reliable. my reasoning is simple. lets not rush on getting equipment that would be say 40% combat ready most of the time. classic example is India, why is India desperately want western built birds? the link below may help. But again I have not been read into threat matrix and Geo-political strategy by decision making panel so I will not make presumptions here of the knowhow!!!
http://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htatrit/articles/20150503.aspx
reliability and combat readiness should matter/ have a higher rating index than price and other matters. the pumas, Buffalo & F-5 have been reliable, however it's time to upgrade and increase capacity for force projection.
below is a nice like of such as nice bird to replace the f-5 however I am not impressed with the dismissal of Kenya with regard to funding such an upgrade.

On Kerry Visit, from open source information we can deduce that Fight against Terrorism Capacity Building will he High on agenda. so we could expect increased funding on that side from Intelligence, Policing, Forensic audit to special forces training (Military & Police) with accompanying hardware.
On pure military hardware like the fast birds, I would be the last to expect any final deal would be inked this soon. remember some time back the US congress blocked military aid to some units due to the Operation against SLDF near Mt. Elgon on human rights maneno. And alas Kerry said he would raise some Human Rights concerns... get my drift here..
Major announcement agreement would definitely be made or inked when Obama is around.

I've just reread my post and need to change some things-at the time I had taken smth! Our airlift must reflect the new Kenyana;on other words from Puntland to N Moz,E DRC and CAR.
I see foresee at least a squadron of 12 Y9s ,the Chinese C 130 with 3 squadrons of smaller CASA 295s for intra theatre transport.
At this stage its envisioned the KN will have an extra 8 warships-time to think of a naval aviation arm? IMO,these same platforms as well as the MI 17 can perform SAR,transport and patrol. They could do with an independent squadron of MI 17s though IDK if they're the intended shipborne chopper element.

Arming Jasiri
First "evidence" I've found for the Jasiri arming project, from a bosnian language site. Short story: Kenya purchased the "Kade Koncar" a Koncar class missile boat from Montenegro for use as an armament transplant donor! Purchase of the Koncar twin ship is also on the table according to this Nov 2014 news article
http://www.vijesti.me/vijesti/vojska-cg-prodala-topovnjacu-keniji-805586
Partial google translate of the article:
The RTOP-401 will first serve as a kind of "organ donor", or key parts of weapons and for the most recent Kenyan warship - corvette P-3214 "Jasira" that after overhaul and re-armament, and so far our own gunboat, sailed as Kenyan patrol boat waters of the Indian Ocean.
All this is the result of excellent Montenegrin-Serbian cooperation in this mutually beneficial business. Preparations for the realization of this work are already well advanced, and the RTOP-401, which is with its long-standing ties to the military section of the Port, moved to a part of the pier to the passenger terminal, perform work on removing the main component artillery.
Experts of the company "Arsenal REM" from Kraljevo which water and make the most experienced former navy-technical officers, engineers and craftsmen former Tivat military shipyard Arsenal, were hired by "Yugoimport" to the RTOP-401 took off her main gun of the "Bofors" YU CAR / L70 Mk.1, 57 mm and šestocjevni top of the PSC and missile defense, type AK-630M 30 mm.
In removing guns as main ship fire control system (SUV), type 9LV-202 Swedish manufacturer "Philips", are engaged in some experienced retired naval officers who have served for many years on the class fast attack craft "Rade Koncar".
"The plan is that after uninstalling the ship, cannon and SUVs are repaired. SUV will modernize the way that he or next to existing sensors, to be added to the thermal imager and laser rangefinder, and then all these components will be transported to Kenya in the local Navy Overhaul Employment in the port of Mombasa, built on a corvette "Jasira," confirmed "the Council" well-informed source close to the Ministry of Defence.
A particular challenge for the repair company will be that with a modernized system 9LV-202 "coupled" fast-track automatic gun AK-630M and thus effectively "join" the Swedish digital and analogue Soviet technology.
The guns and fire control system with RTOP- 401 so will finally "give teeth" largest Kenyan warship - 85-meter Corvette "Jasira" of 1,400 tons, which is priced at over $ 50 million, was built for the Navy and the East African state in 2005 in Spain, but has not been equipped with adequate weapons.
After dismantling the current naružanja itself gunboat 401 being dokovana and repaired in Montenegro, and with it will be removed launchers for missile types SS-N-2, and ship fitting bow cannon caliber 40 mm and two small cannon or machine guns on the stern, turned into a classic patrol boat, which will also be delivered to Kenya.
The appearance is that Kenyans maybe after the completion of this work, sells and twin "Rade Koncar", also scrapped Navy gunboat crmogorske RTOP- 404 "Hasan Zahirović-Laca".

Police to acquire drones and armoured vehicles
Police have embarked on an equipment upgrading process that includes acquisition of drones, patrol boats, armored personnel carriers and armored ambulances in the face of rising cases of terrorism and banditry in the country. Deputy Inspector General of Police Grace Kaindi and Nairobi County police boss Benson Kibue late last year led a team of police officers to Sweden, Denmark, Britain and South Africa to tour some of the manufacturers and gave recommendations of the suitable equipment. - See more at: http://www.the-star.co.ke/news/police-acquire-drones-and-armoured-vehicles#sthash.iCvMp5cR.EAP5uqDn.dpuf

I have read statements attributed to the Auditor General on spending by the KDF and some of the lines being questioned is travel and accommodation for Serbians, clearance of cargo from Serbia etc. Hii maneno hapa iko na ukweli.

Israeli firms seek to offer security expertise in Kenya
NAIROBI, Kenya, May 20 – Ten privately owned Israeli firms are currently in Kenya studying cases of insecurity in a bid to offer their expertise.
The companies are specifically interested in offering consultancy services to key government and private installations in the country amid numerous terror threats.
Israeli ambassador to Kenya Yahel Vilan says Kenya was picked among other African countries due to its strategic position and its porous borders with troubled nations.......

MV mtafiti will relieve some of the oceanographic function oF KNS jasiri as it takes a lead role as the fleets capital ship which will letter be joined with the Corvette from india. an extra OPV from Bangaladesh and 3, 12 meter boats will join in from bangladesh ship yard. the 12m boats will be for lake victoria.

the new armata t-14,anyone?
This beast came out a month ago and no comment! Niaje? I know many here don't admire Ivan equipment,IMO,a horrible blunder but just look at it!
Btw,in a few years,a 152mm gun version will come out!! Already it outranges all Western guns and that 30 mm cannon kills all softskin vehicles and choppers with 7k.
If it were up to me the KDF would've gone for this not the Merk 4 an otherwise excellent tank.

Is it true the real aim of the oceanographic ship is ocean surveys to pave way for a sub, which is the real reason the Brits were so against the KNS Jasiri?
What type of OPVs does Bangladesh make? Uncle Google doesn't show anything.
When can we expect the Indian corvette? I thought it'd be here by March.

No offence, but all the stories we've heard I'll believe it when I see at least 2 in KAF livery.

Hope this is another rumour as usual! Single engine Fighting Falcons have the highest crash rate both in training and combat. They are cheaper and as such mass produced. Single engine is not good enough in modern combat.
Commercial pressure has been active to open new markets....am not surprised if this is true.
Eagles would serve that region very well.
