Take my advise, bro. Just ignore the journalists. They will burst your arteries if you dont. They are the tame dogs of western commercial interests in Africa. How do they even know what was discussed in the privacy of the President's or the CJ's office - which they admit was in private?

Btw -you didnt know of those UPDF civilian-tasked C-130? Smile

what nonesense rubbish is this?

Kenya’s case
Kenya, on the other hand — being “the most advanced
polity in region”— presents a puzzle of its own, with two prominent
politicians in the running for next year’s presidential elections, Uhuru
Kenyatta and William Ruto, facing International Criminal Court
indictments at The Hague.

Moreover, even in the event that neither Kenyatta
nor Ruto win the election, Kenya is still considered a lesser power than
Uganda when it comes to regional security and the war on terror.

Until last year, when Kenya joined the fight
against Al Shabaab in Somalia, for example, Uganda and Burundi were the
only countries contributing troops to Amisom. Next-door neighbour Kenya
was nowhere in the picture.

This would explain remarks attributed to Mrs
Clinton during her visit in Kenya, to the effect that Kenyatta and
Ruto’s candidature was a risk to US relations with Nairobi.

The remarks were made in private meetings with top
Kenyan officials, whom Mrs Clinton reportedly told the US would impose
sanctions if Mr Ruto or Mr Kenyatta became president.

By contrast, Washington questions Uganda’s
democracy and-human rights record only during closed door discussions
with the Kampala leadership.

The worst possible occurrence at the worse possible time in Kenyana. But Zenawi has been fading gradually for months and given time to Analyst and Policy Strategist time to simulate possible outcome of his demise, both in Ethiopia and Kenyana as well.

First all, no matter which simulation eventually is realized, there will be Structural Adjustments in Leadership, Priorities and Practice in Kenyana - largely because Ethiopian Policy on her IGAD engagement in these three areas were personalized-to-Zenawi. And there will be 'gains'' for all players in this Kenyana, as well as ''loses''.

Departing from an acknowledgement that the Zenawi's Authoritarianism was driven by what estwhile maxist revolutionaries loosely termed as the exigencies of a ''developmental state'' which places greater priority on national socio-economic emancipation above human liberties, it becomes evident that the necessary structures for a Democratic Succession and Continuity in Ethiopia are in effect non-existent. How, then, the transition from Zenawi is effected is really unpredictable even to the Ethiopians themselves, at this juncture, but predicated on the following"-

1. How the the Broad Coalition of ethnic-based military-political blocks Zenawi constructed and utilised to government Ethiopia [in order of population size (a)Amhara (Ahmara National Democratic Movement) overthrown in 1991 by Zenawi, (b)the Oromo (Oromo Peoples Democractic Front), (c)the Southern ethnic groups under the SPDM, and (d)Zenawi's Tigrian People Liberation front] will deal with the competing interests within this Coalition, and particularly if the Tigrian who are a small minority (2.6% of the Population) but preponderantly in control of the Military, Intelligence and Internal Government, will cede leadership to either of the two majority groupings (1 & 2). Deputy Premier / now acting Head of State is from one of the minor Southern ethnic groups in the SPDM, and probably will allign himself with Amharaic ANDM.

2. The Eritrean leadership and what advantage they will see in the demise of Zenawi - it is hoped that they will seek rapproachment with Ethiopia, and a break with Zenawi's intolerant myopia about Eritrea.

3. How the dozen or so ''liberation movements'' ranged against Zenawi's leadership for twenty years, and who he deliberately conducted a stalin-line extermination campaign, will be treated by the interim Ethiopian Leadership. In the absence of incitement by the usual ''external Powers'', it is possible too they might adopt a half-full-glass policy and seek accommodation with the Interim Ethiopian Leadership.

4. IGAD and EAC-expanded have a vital role to play in stabilizing the national dialogue that will ensue in Ethiopia, and in keeping focus on the Ethiopian people - every political pronouncement and action by this region must not be spared in this regard. A divided IGAD/EAC-expanded will be as useful to the already circling bald-headed Vultures as a dead carcass on the African plains!!

Zenawi's passing could bcome a crucial milestone in our collective maturation journey as East Africans. Of greater significance than extracting GoSS from Bashir's Sudan even!! Conversely, the dangers of a retrogression are just as poignant - in truth Ethiopia is not just another Country in East Africa, aisseee!!

Haiya!! Leteni basi!!

The JASIRI IS COMING HOME bounce bounce bounce bounce Very Happy

A Sh4.6 billion Kenya Navy ship linked with the Anglo-Leasing
scandals is set to be launched by President Kibaki after docking in
Mombasa next week.

An official at the Department of Defence on Tuesday
evening confirmed to the Nation that the ship was expected in Mombasa
and would be launched shortly after by the President.

“Yes, I can confirm that the ship will arrive next
week, most probably on Monday. It will be launched the same week,” said
the official.

However, the source declined to divulge more details.

The ship will be launched nine years after the
supply contract was signed and after years of controversy on being
linked to a series of suspect security procurement scandals exposed by
former Governance and Ethics permanent secretary John Githongo.

The Department of Defence contract with Euromarine Industries of
Spain was listed by a number of reports as one of the 18 suspect
security deals generally referred to as Anglo-Leasing scandals.

Under the deal signed on July 15, 2003, Euromarine
was contracted to deliver an oceanographic survey vessel to the Kenya
Navy for close to Sh4.6 billion.

On the same day, two financing contracts were also
entered into with two Spanish firms. At some point, Euromarine
sub-contracted the ship’s construction to another Spanish firm known as
Astilleros Gondan.

However, payments for the contract were stopped in June 2005
after Mr Githongo blew the whistle on the suspicious financing deals.

The supplier then sued the government for
withholding payments for the vessel which was dubbed “Kenya’s Spanish
Armada” by former British High Commissioner Edward Clay.

After a long tumultuous wait the Jasiri is finally coming home to port. This off-shore patrol ship will bolster the kenyan navy in maritime patrol, search/rescue, and defensive/offensive capabilities on the Indian ocean. The timing of this ship significance is great because it will give the kenyan navy more fire power in the battle of kismayo. The ship will be equipped with new fire controls, Ship to Ship missles, and advanced radar... More vessels will be procured by the kenyan navy in the near future...

Is the Kenyan naval yards up for an expansion or upgrade????

Haiya!! Leteni basi!!

@ON
[justify]Just to add:

A number of scenarios are likely to play out. Including:

1. Hailemariam Desalegn, Ethiopia's interim prime minister, is likely to be sworn in as substantive PM when t
he 547-member Parliament holds an emergency session. After all his party holds 546 seats!! We better
learn to sound/write his name correctly. Neverthless, Zenawi's shoes are large and will take the new guy
a while before his feet can grow to fit well.

2. The new man never participated in the war against Mengistu Haile Mariam as he was a postgrad engineering
student in Finland. However, he returned soon after Zenawi toppled Mengistu and eventually joined politics
and served in various capacities incl. president of his southern region, advisor to Zenawi and deputy party
leader, among others. Point is he has no doubt understudied Zenawi and his policies may actually vary little
from those of Zenawi. Relationship with US, Eritrea, unlikely to change. Policy on Somalia unlikely to change.

3. A period of instability may be cause of worry for things such as LAPSSET. LAPSSET serves the interests of
Ethiopia, more so southern Ethiopia. So we won't see him backtracking on this. In fact, the communications
minister, (Bereket Simon) reaffirmed that government policy will remain unchanged under Hailemarian Desalegn

4. More senior/experienced party leaders may want to dethrone Hailemariam Desalegn. Moreover, the ruling
EPRDF, a coalition of four parties, has always appointed important members of Meles’s Tigrayan Peoples’
Liberation Front to key posts, including foreign affairs. After all, Hailemarian neither fought in the war nor
comes from Tigray. The party congress scheduled for September 2012 is something to watch as it will
decide whether he remains leader until 2015. Of course, it is important to note that Zenawi actually
appointed Hailemariam Desalegn as his political heir.

5. Competing selfish interests are already at play with each angling for its piece. Old friends wanting to keep
their piece, new ones jostling for entrance, a myriad of opposition groups trying him out, Somalia militants
may exploit transition to cause some trouble, etc. All these are not good for Kenyana. But, Ethiopia will
nevertheless continue to play a crucial role in the region although there are genuine fears of turmoil.

Meles Zenawi (born Legesse Zenawi), changed his name to 'Meles' in honour of an activist killed by Ethiopia's communist govt. He quit medical school and returned to Tigray to join the revolt against Mengistu. He helped found the Tigrayan People's Liberation Front. He later broadened his base and formed the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front which incorporated other ethnic groups. The new premier will have a hard act to follow as is the case with succeeding a long time autocratic ruler.

here is a translated version of the page.
i hope the kenya news media will give us a good view of the ship instead of the president doing his thing.

The "Jasiri" finally travels to KenyaBuilt in 2004 in the estuary of Ribadeo, the frigate anchored spent
several years in Sada and summer and will fight against piracy in the
Indian dani Gayoso

ribadeo / voice May 9, 2012 05:00
It has been eight years since Shipyards Gondán, company based in Figueras (Asturias), dropped the KNS Jasiri, a corvette of 85 meters and a speed of about 30 knots noted for its military aspect. And no wonder.
The ship was designed with the objective of being part of the military
fleet of the Government of Kenya, but emerged after launching economic
problems that frustrated the salesThe Kenyan Executive awarded the project to the company Euromarine
Industries, which decided to outsource the construction of the boat
Gondán Shipyards.
When it came time to deliver, manufacturer and buyer did not reach an
agreement, so several years the ship remained docked at the port of
Sada.
During this past year was at facilities in Figueras Gondán has, when it
was announced Euromarine arbitration between the African country and,
finally something that never took place with the signing of an agreement
between the two. This was confirmed yesterday Gondán Shipyards director, Álvaro Platero, satisfied by the solution reached. Platero said the ship will depart from Figueras in midsummer, and after putting on the necessary weapons, will travel to Kenya. "It is ideal for sailing in the waters of Kenya and Somalia to fight piracy. The ship also is prepared to meet oceanographic features, "he said. Before leaving for Kenya will have to make a stop at another port for
installation of two sophisticated guns and several machine guns.
These days Gondán workers performing maintenance on one of the ships
that most interest has risen in recent years in Galicia, especially in
the Marina and the West Asturian. For eight years the ship has been docked Jasiri three ports: Ribadeo, that of Sada and finally Figueras. In the three was a major attraction for residents, an interest that accrues to the vicissitudes of history.
They have never known the exact reasons for the failure of their sale,
although much has been written in national and international press on
the ship. From alleged corruption schemes to complex political and business even reached the courts. Today all that is part of history and, finally, Jasiri may travel to the dangerous Kenyan waters.

No story about the Ilemi triangle is complete without the mention of oil. The recent discovery of oil in Turkana must have jolted the South Sudanese into action to prevent Kenya from carrying out exploration in that area. Don't know what their game plan is.

@Mekatilili
Good link.

Now, it is interesting that after/about the time of visit of a SS we are now being reported all over the place.
Ma-vultures joh!

What to do? As a nation we need to get our act together and stop petty squabbling and realize that all around us (almost) we are surrounded by elements (either directly or by proxy) who want to ensure we never raise our heads.

We need to be very wise. Crafty if you want. God help us! I hope somebody is burning some mid-night oil thinking of a way out. We can pick some lessons from the Israelis.

Back to these South Sudan guys; they haven't even sorted out their issues with Bashir and they are now on us...seems like dealing with Bashir was better. Less influence, puppetry from the West.

Asante ya punda ni mateke. How can you take your best friend to court?

Best way is for Africans to sort their own issues. We can talk. This is Africa; where wazees can talk and sort out issues bila those funny courts where justice can be sold to the highest bidder.

As i said a couple of months back, SS would come back and bite our behinds. Whats the point of nurturing SS from infancy to adulthood and they go and do that ? Whats gonna happen 10 yrs down the road and Southern Somalia says we are stealing their oil in the ocean? SS and Kenyana may end up like Turkey and Syria maneno if we are not careful.

SS will surely cause more trouble to its neighbours, Kenya included. That is until they mature and get responsible leadership.

In the meantime this guy Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) - Page 3 Kdf_so11 and his mates must be very dusty and thirsty.
Anyway, here is a little video clip about the advance of Kismayo

ON
the Death of Ethiopia's Meles zenawi will be a great loss to the country and kenyana, especially when it comes to visionary leadership and his bulwark against extremist militancy. Western interlopers will now have room to do "business" with successive PM which they will find a relief from the Late PM's stalin-line diplomacy. Stabilty in Ethiopia Is key for NFD's mode of operation. Key road-maps the successive PM and the Ethiopian Government must consider to continue is to complete all the presided development projects.

It is at the best interest of SS to keep peace so that all the economic plans currently presided by GoSS leader Salva Kirr be successful. Goss now or in the future can't afford to bear irrational militancy towards to any member within Kenyan and for that matter Kenya. What might spark disagreements are usually televised by foreign media. ilemi triangle conflict is reported and fueled by foreign media just like the rampant televised famine Ethiopia had witnessed prior to Meles assuming office in 1991. All this gutterism not good for kenyana

If July 2012 drydock photo of the Jasiri is accurate then as of July 25 there are no obvious indications of armaments on this boat

Further update from this site (google translation of relevant paragraphs shown below)
http://www.lavozdegalicia.es/noticia/galicia/2012/05/09/jasiri-viaja-fin-kenia/0003_201205G9P14991.htm

"Gondán Shipyards director, Álvaro Platero said the ship will depart from Figueras in midsummer, and after putting on the necessary weapons, will travel to Kenya. "It is ideal for sailing in the waters of Kenya and Somalia to fight piracy. The ship also is prepared to meet oceanographic features, "he said.
Before leaving for Kenya it will have to make a stop at another port for installation of two sophisticated guns and several machine guns"

Some more information: Called in at port of Valletta, Malta around Aug 12. Info listed on this site
http://www.seawaves.com/portvisits.asp

and this site
http://www.maltashipphotos.com/standardpage.asp?category=NavalVisits

I wonder if the arming of the ship was done there?

SIN has the information too:-

Intelligence reports confirm that Kenya’s naval vessel, KNS Jasiri left Ribadeo, Asturias province, Spain and is sailing home to Mombasa Kenya after it was armed and its crew trained to navigate the vessel.

KNS Jasiri has docked at three different ports in Spain, Ribadeo, Sada and Figueras where it was finally fitted with sophisticated weapons before sailing home to Kenya.

Strategic Intelligence Service confirms that on August 12, 2012 Kenyan Navy OPV KNS JASIRI called to the port of Valletta Malta.

Kenya defense procurement is quite precise on its role, where it hardly procures something it cannot scramble in a timely manner, defense experts have explained in relation to training of the crew.

KNS Jasiri has been armed and fitted with modern naval warship radar and radio besides sophisticated weaponry to handle naval warfare based on the level of threats at the East African maritime environment.

Kenya has the best and most well armed and equipped navy in the East Africa with its British Vosper Thornycroft built fast attack naval boats.

KNS Jasiri is armed to fight piracy and also engage enemy from sea hence armed with long range cannons, and missile launching ports.

Kenya Defense procurement rejected the ship but after EuroMarine agreed to meet the requirement and the KDOD agreed to pay the ship builder completed the naval vessel with both naval warfare and oceanographic survey features.

The ship left its manufacturers dock after it was fitted with the necessary weaponry but stopped at a second port where it was fitted with the sophisticated weapons and long-range machine-guns on various sides of the ship to increase its capacity to engage an enemy from different directions.

Siwe na shaka kaka, there are some pretty good heads on that. One of the benefits of of having a well educated highly skilled pool to draw from.
I would peg this suit over the Elemi triangle as a ploy to get us into some sort of concessional arrangement to share the goodies in the area.
Then again, having seen the issue between Malawi and Tanzania, it came to mind that (and I stand to be corrected) Tanzania had not lodged any complaints or request for international arbitration over the disputed Lake Nyasa since the boundaries were drawn up by the colonial powers, thus had no strong backing for its superfluous claims. GOSS may have taken note and chosen to register some sort of claim, if only as another arrow in its quiver should push ever come to shove. With a neighbour as powerful as .KE I would definitely want to keep some sort of kryptonite for a bad day.
What is of most concern however is the belligerent frame of mind GOSS as well as itscitizens have towards Kenya and Kenyans, in blatant disregard of the friendship accorded them in their time of need. Be it the tantrums of a child[ish] nation or just plain old avarice, hii ufala lazima watawacha. Evil or Very Mad

Illemni Triangle will remain kenyan, But GOSS isn't beating war drums like TZ and the malawi issue but rather they are taking a diplomatic approach to solve the issue by going to the UN and AU to see if kenya does truly hold the illemni triangle.. The somalia issue is just absurd how can you claim an ocean perpendicular to a border scratch confused if that was so then Siad Barre would have taken over those water ages ago. The government should demarcate the borders and show these guys what they are claiming is there is actually ours..

I have a picture of a BAE hawk that crashed at Laikipia airbase and has been rusting away in some bushes Very Happy

Hey Crane, wacha zako bwana, of course it is the competition for resources. What else do you think? And why now after we announce some discoveries? All the same we are prepared.
Why are you taunting the bullet man on the hawk? 12 frames of this bird were acquired sometime in the 80s. We can't expect that all of them are still in a flyable condition. Don't you guys in UG have some birds that you have cannibalized for spares? Or some that you no longer fly?
