The United Nations register of conventional arms transfers 2009 indicates that Uganda procured some 23 battle tanks from Russia. The description of the type of tanks is not indicated. Anyone with further information please?

This if from the Military Balance 2011, indicating only 10 T-72s, so likely the 23 tanks were T-55s.

These fellows in the press never tire of critisizing things. What would they do diffently.

I've read about these guys from the press here. This is a free country, they can use their time, space and resources however they like as long as they don't infringe on other people's rights. I just don't think they will be given permission to fly that thing.

I'm not scoffing, I admire initiative. But in this case, the sky is the limit. Experience gained can be applied elsewhere.

The Monitor is just trying to sell news. Its expected, in any inauguration ceremony a technical team form the designer or the providers to be present. . Be it a Juakali project to famous white elephant one, They are technical aspects that might need to be clarified.. The birds are still under Russian warranty and all dealings have to be as per their demands.

Looks like we were not doing that badly with pilots after all. Idi Amin had trained a lot of his tribesmen, and, apparently, some 30 Ugandan pilots are unaccounted for in Libya.

The Uganda soldiers in Libya were not in as mercenaries. Libya has always had a sort of Foreign Military Assistance programs towards Uganda and Rwanda for more then 30years. In these programs foreign soldier train In Libya and upon graduating the best in the class are enlisted in the Libyan forces. As the foreign enlist serve in Libya, the direction of trade changes, and part of the funds invested in their training is waived off. The foreign enlist gain experience and skill before subsequently returning Home

@ Balozi, we've never trained any pilots in Libya. We prefer to train them where the planes are made or overhauled from. Ugandans are trained at the Soroti Flying School for theory and light trainers before they head to either Russia, Israel etc.

Those pilots were chose to follow Idi Amin when he was overthrown. Who would blame them, the Israelis had blown about 15 of our MiG21s and the Tanzanians took the rest. The pilots had better chances of flying in Libya.

Why not recall these guys for duty in Uganda? They are some of the best and it is a shame if they are left to waste. Afterall they were trained with tax payers money. But then there is the question of loyalty and trust.Nkt.

Yes Zim is going through hard times and South Africa has deployed troops at its border for years. In fact the one of the South African Artillery units is currently patrolling the border with Zim ( http://www.army.mil.za/hq_units/air_def_art_fmn/aboutus.htm ). Zimbabwe Mounted regiment (Grey Scouts = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Forces_of_Zimbabwe ) have been patrolling the Zimbabwean side of the borders for decades. Exactly why the Tswana deployed was sensitive or became an issue, I can only speculate.


I still don't know how it ended. The press lost interest. Zimbabwe still has its issues and had had these issues for years. How BDF decided it was time to put heavy guns at the border and then decided it was time to withdraw, it does not seem to have a bearing to developemnts in Zim that are in the public domain.


However in view of the poor relations and that Botswana is acting as a Western proxy, I think it is to be expected that BDF will do exercises at the Zim border. It might just have been an exercise some reporter got wind of and printed. I am sure the Tswana would not have wanted Zimbabwe deploying assets (listening posts, ground survellance and counter battery radars or even be flying recce flights) to monitor BDF movements/exercise

While our neighbours are training boys to perform recco ops. exposes them to advance danger The U.P.D.F the strongest army in the region , consults Israel and does it the professional way.

Congratulations. Good progress. I was thinking over the past few weeks that our forces need to started working towards UAV systems. I think they are a great asset.

@jasiri The Orbiter 2 UAV is light drone for quick close contact engagements. It’s a stand off units eps. For special ops. Unlike large drones that can engage in C4SIR the Orbiter 2 has low or near impossible radar signatures making it immuned to enemy AA units, its idea for deep territory incursion. The drones that come with C4SIR features have high radar signature and can easy be shoot down by AA units or their equivalents.



The Orbiter 2 UAV is a special ops drone.

Seems Zim might have been planning to hit a Voice of America radio station in Botswana ... ... or Botswana was trying to create a situation where the US will give them arms and also get closer militarily.
